"Caulfield - Clarity In A Sea Of Confusion Review"

As their debut record, Clarity In A Sea Of Confusion is the "Great introduction" to Caulfield. At only seven tracks, it is a relatively short introduction, but it's not lacking and therefore not stretched. Here, the relatively new band (formed last year by ex-members of a range of Western Sydney punk rock outfits) highlight their talents and outline the expectations you should hold of them moving forward.

Opener, This Is Hell immediately attention-grabbing with its initially industrial vocals switching to Mahan's Brutal vocals. All tracks features Shishineh's muscular screaming vocals, alongside his clean melodic style. Mid-Tracl, With Fate, offers interesting guitar interplay by Andrew Gill and Ned Jankovic, their staple heavy electric sound alongside softer, melodious riffs. With Fate also features the most keyboard work on the record and considering it's done well it whould have been good to hear more. Though consistent throughout a touch more inventiveness in fills from Brad Ruddiman would have made a more interesting listen.

Not without fault - as every debut is - Caulfield have nonetheless succeeded in releasing a record where the good outweighs the bad. They have done absorbing things with tracks such as These Words with its spoken- word samples and the previously - mentioned alluring, yet spare, key sections throughout. While it would have been nice to hear a few more things implemented, Clarity In A Sea Of Confusions still a great preface to their career - Drum Media

Review by Derek J. Huckel
The music that CAULFIELD play is described as melodic post-hardcore band. These guys music is not my cup of tea but I can see their appeal, where it will fit and they should climb some heights with this sweet release of theirs entitled Clarity In A Sea Of Confusion. They seem to be touring like demons too which will help too I'm sure, as well as build their musical chops.
If you want a description of 'melodic post-hardcore' it’s the emotional hardcore genre of the emo singer mixed with electronica and heavy guitars n' rat-a-tat drums and the growly guy singing at the same time or in turn with the sweeter sounding emo singer. Some might pick LINKIN PARK as a godfather to this band or music style.
One could say they sound a little like PARKWAY DRIVE but a bit less brutal, their gentler brother perhaps. With this sound they could perhaps reach the heights too (maybe too big a suggestion perhaps) but there are many similar bands out there so maybe management or right time / place is the key. Bands the CAULFIELD troupe have been in before range from ME VS YOU, ENVY PARADE, GUNS FOR GLORY and SIENNA SKIES, so if you liked them there’s a chance you might like CAULFIELD too.
Being all teenagers in the band or a bit older, I'm sure it’s mainly at the similar age group. The music will tweak many a heart string of angst and love, love lost, deep questions we have of the world, and more - i.e.'This prison built inside it’s all in my mind. Take back every word I said. Just forget everything we’ve done' - Bring Sunday. Other tracks have titles such as This Is Hell – speaking as the tormented soul , World On Holiday, I Always Drink Alone – about being strong from pressures of the world, Escape Plans in Cold Hands – sounds like some tortured love. Maybe these guys should have Lifeline numbers etc on their covers or website otherwise they might receive counselling query emails from their fans...
Track seven meshes their song These Words with a quote that sounds like it’s from the aged philosophical text of Robert Burton 'The Anatomy of Melancholy' (1621) mixed with a reading from HG Wells 'War of the Worlds'. Widely read guys or smart producer fellas? It’s a nice touch.
The sound of this EP CD is great! The production sounds quite top class for a first release. A huge sound. Great cover work too, tray art, and lyrics included too. I love that input. All for $10 – what a steal!! But, as said, Clarity In A Sea Of Confusion is not for me personally but I would recommend that if this review caught your interest about CAULFIELD then check them on MySpace (see below), then maybe see a show and you could buy the CD there at the gig, or if you loved the sound so much online then dash to the shop now! - Sludge Factory

Bio

With their energetic live shows and mix of modern punk, post hardcore and alternative music, Sydney five-piece CAULFIELD hit the road to launch their debut album.

Having formed in 2009, the Caulfield lineup features ex-members of Guns For Glory, Sienna Skies, Me Vs. You and Envy Parade with Mahan Shishineh on Vocals/Keys, Andrew Gill on Vocals/Guitars, Ned Jankovic on Guitar, Cole Wilkins on Bass and Brad Ruddiman on Drums.

Their debut release, ‘Clarity In A Sea Of Confusion’ is described by guitarist Ned Jankovic as “the perfect introduction” to the band. ‘Clarity In A Sea Of Confusion’ encapsulates the feeling of being emotionally and mentally lost and finding ways to get back to where you want to be. This theme, combined with a mix of musical elements loved by the band makes for a truly stand-out debut.

‘Clarity In A Sea Of Conusion’ features the debut single ‘Bring Sunday’ – a song about self-perception and learning to let go of the past and not dwelling on mistakes made. “It relates to how sometimes you can feel like a stranger even around the people you know best and overcoming this so you can move on with life,” says Jankovic.

In the space of such a short time, the band have already achieved so much having supported such acts as Buried In Verona, Vanstorm, Pledge This!, Vegas In Ruins and Hands Like Houses and also signing a deal with New Justice Records for the debut release.

Caulfield will bring their “extremely energetic, random and just fun” live show to the road this November and December to launch the new album.
