Bio

Cecilia Suhr’s artistry began to take shape in the year of 2004 when she started to record her improvised piano compositions. Since then, Cecilia has been performing in and around New York City as a member of several different bands, and also accompanying singer-songwriters as a violinist. In the summer of 2006, Cecilia resumed her recording process. From this point on, Cecilia has pursued a variety of musical genres indiscriminately. Some days she would write a structured song, produce music, and play instruments; other days she would improvise with operatic voice, piano, violin, guitar, and an electronic soundbank called X-Pand. Since then, Cecilia’s artistry emphasizes her versatility as a musician, vocalist, composer, producer, songwriter, and improviser. In doing so, she explores all dimensions of her being, describing her music as being characterized by transience. Her music does not aim for perfection but for perfecting, implying that the “-ing” present form is significant to her musical formation. This goal does not deny such concepts of perfection but rather gives more value to the constant endeavor to improve and progress. Being an artist is far more than just playing the right notes or playing in tune—Cecilia believes it requires a commitment to a lifestyle of aestheticism. It is almost like a religious ritual that one practices throughout one’s life course. In this sense, Cecilia escapes from consistency and monotony—the proverbial genre categorization. Although some may perceive this course as lacking a unique style, for Cecilia, mutability presents the “whole.” Because she does not dismiss or repress any dimensions of her existence, Cecilia feels this philosophy more closely represents who she is (or for lack of a better word, causes a disappearance of who she is). Rather than defining her within only one category, genre or type, in showing bits and pieces of her musical sides, she is constantly reinventing herself. In short, there is no effort to preserve the image of an artist one started off as no one knows the destination One only knows the direction toward the destination. There is no End, only Beginning and Process, Presence and Now. Cecilia invites whoever stumbles upon her artistry to examine her open-ended possibilities and questions.
