"Review of Coal Town Music Festival"

"The three members of Celtic Chaos took the stage very casually, being very non-imposing or full of energy. However, this notion was quickly put to rest within the first two or three notes that exploded forth from the group's instruments.

The eight-song set was a perfect showcase of musical talent that has clearly been honed from years of playing together. The instruments meshed perfectly, with each member being clearly heard among the others while still producing a full and rich sound.

Even without the accompaniment of drums (the only instruments were violin, cello and accordion), the group's rhythm was amazing. Opening with a traditional song called "Valley of the Moon". The addition of vocals later on in the set was also another highlight.

All in all, it was extremely enjoyable for all who heard it." - The Log

"The Celtic Connection"

By Catholine Butler
CELTIC CHAOS
Chaos In The Kitchen
The name Celtic Chaos originates with weekly sessions held in a
hotel near Eilean Donan Castle on the west coast of Scotland. The
sessions offer an opportunity for musicians of all ages with a love for
traditional Celtic music to come together to play a variety of jigs,
reels, hornpipes, airs and strathspeys.

Celtic Chaos is a group of traditional Celtic musicians from Qualicum
Beach, British Columbia, who took as an example, the Scottish sessions
for their first CD and entitled it, Chaos In The Kitchen. But the
Qualicum Beach musicians went a step further with their labour
of love and all the proceeds from their first album will be donated to the British Columbia Cancer Foundation, Vancouver Island.

If you look at the CD cover of Chaos In The Kitchen, the top of
the kitchen table tells the story... it's total chaos. It leaves no doubt
that there must have been a real session going on but from the
smiling faces around the table, it looks like they were all enjoying the
craic. They must have spent long hours drinking tea or maybe something stronger while perfecting the music for their first album.

Chaos In The Kitchen has the sound of an impromptu traditional session
with the musicians playing for the pure joy of their music. Celtic
Chaos play a variety of Celtic music from the jigs and reels of Ireland
and Scotland to French-Canadian dance tunes with traditional songs from Scotland and Ireland.

"Everyone really enjoyed your show...it was delightful to get people up dancing....I would say there was something for everyone and then some! I was impressed with the range of moods and music from foot-tapping, body-moving rhythms to heart-felt airs. This kind of Chaos I would invite into my kitchen anytime!!

"Cosmic Debris"

Emma and Joyce Beaton
Off the Beaton Track

Mother and daughter duo Joyce and Emma Beaton have released their debut CD "Off the Beaton Track".

I was delighted to see this release after reviewing Celtic Chaos', "Chaos In The Kitchen" CD a few months ago.

I was very fortunate to have a brief interview with Joyce and Emma prior to them going on stage at the Duncan Garage Show Room.

Joyce explained that a large portion of the sales from the CD will go to the BC Cancer Foundation. Emma & Joyce have the honor of performing at the upcoming BC Cancer Foundation Major Donor Celebration.

I ask Joyce how she felt about the recording. She explained that she had a limited budget for this recording and that some of the tracks where recorded in their living room. This would explain the relaxed feel of the performance. Scott Litlejohn, of BC Recording did an exceptional job of capturing this energetic performance.

My favorite track off the CD has to be "Hard Dang It, Hard". Emma explained that the actual name of the song is Hard Ain't It Hard. This track features Emma on Cello and Banjo. Emma uses a flailing claw hammer technique that gave the song a very percussive sound. I hope to hear more from these two ladies in the future.

Emma and Joyce will also be performing at the Dancing Bean in Chemainus. Make sure you catch their show. You won't be disappointed.
