"Words of love, hope and despair"

Words of love, hope and despair

Another cross-national combine that's opening ears in Sweden is Cerro Esperanza Band, whose beguiling Nubes del Alma earned nomination as the best Swedish folk-world CD in 2003. Chilean Jorge Alcaide (vocals, guitar, tiple, bouzouki) fronts an eight-member ensemble rounded out by clarinet, trumpet, trombone, bass trombone, accordion, cimbalom, thumb-piano, double bass and a variety of world percussion. Alcaide composed and arranged all the music, penning lyrics for six songs and adapting a Petrarch sonnet for the seventh. An unlikely juxtaposition of Balkan, Latin American, jazz and classical instrumentation, impeccably conceived and executed, provides elegant foundation for Alcaide's soulful vocals. He projects a romantic presence in Spanish and Swedish, words of love, hope and despair at their most sublime.

Bio

Latino? Balkan? Jazz...?

The music of Cerro Esperanza is a mixture of influences from many parts of the world. But most of all - this is the very own music by Jorge Alcaide, arranged for his group Cerro Esperanza Band. There is a brass section with trumpet, trombone and bass-trombone; there is a Balkan clarinet, percussion, double bass, accordion and cimbalom. the group is a collection of some of the most brilliant musicians in their genre in Sweden. Jorge plays acoustic guitar, acoustic bass guitar, tiple and bouzouki.

And he sings! Mostly in Spanish, but a couple of songs are in Swedish. Nubes del alma is a truly fascinating CD that has been warmly received in Sweden.
