The band started in grade 9 I guess as Five to Six, but eventually evolved into Samwise the next year. Playing all covers at first we covered Van Halen, Dave Matthews, Matthew Good, Eve 6, Matchbox Twenty, Creed, Foo Fighters, and other rock/punk bands. Around 2001/02 we started writing our own songs, mostly emo/rock/punk. Almost John Mayerish to be honest. The songs really reflect what was happening in the songwriter's life when the song was written. Thus, there are Dashboard like emo ballads, but also optimistic songs as well. I think what sets us apart from other bands is that we have the ability to stray from one genre to another with ease because we've all come from classical/jazz music backrounds which almost forces you to look outside the accepted styles of music. I mean, we've each had our rap phase where we listened to Wu Tang; our punk phase when we kept Millencolin in our cd players, and also our Dave Matthews phase. But the important thing is that we are still influenced by these types of music even though they may not be in heavy rotation on our ipods. I think all this band needs is a chance to showcase it's talent.
