Cesar Paucar

Cesar Paucar

Peruvian guitarist that plays a variety of world music, from classical, folk and flamenco to Latin, Afro-Cuban and music from the Andes and coastal Peru. All these rhythms performed with a jazz approach, meaning improvisation and solos.

Cesar Paucar studied Peruvian guitar with such reknowned artists like Raúl García Zárate and Félix Casaverde. Although César's background is Peruvian music, this has in no way limited his musical boundaries, since he has also studied classical and flamenco guitar. In 2000 he worked with Latin guitar duo Strunz & Farah on transcriptions of their music. In the US (where he currently resides he was influenced by the improvisations of fingerstyle guitarists such as Phil Keaggy and Tommy Emmanuel. It was from Phil Keaggy that César was influenced to perform with a looper, an effects device that permits the musician to record a lick or a series of chords live and then improvise over them. César has been working with loopers for over seven years now. He is a requested guitarist for the RSSC line of cruise ships, having performed on the S.S. Voyager in 2005 and 2006 and the S.S. Mariner in 2007. It was his experience as a solo guitarist in these cruise lines that gave him this performance revelation: "I realized I could perform, during an hour set, a myriad of rhythms and music I love, from classical to flamenco, to Peruvian and then to free-flowing jams. Before that, I used to limit my repertoire to either JUST classical, or JUST Peruvian and so on. But working on cruises I started to mix all the styles I play, and it was refreshing to the audience. At the same time, no matter what I performed, it came out as my own style, since its music I have always heard and played." Overall, César Páucar brings new and innovative sounds to traditional music from Peru and Latin America. Flamenco and South American guitar techniques are interwoven with rhythms from the Caribbean, Andes mountains and coastal Peru. His latin-jazz approach to acoustic guitar creates original music rooted in tradition yet enhanced by the fusion of world sounds.
