Roots Rocker: Chad Hollister is a no-frills kind of rocker, cast from the same mold as such classic-American artists as Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, and John Mellencamp. On His fine new disc, Life, he offers tunes that rely solely on his ability to tell a good story and craft infectious hooks and lyrics.

Hollister hails from Burlington Vermont, where he cut his musical teeth gigging with hometown heroes Phish. Along the way he's also openened for Tom Petty and Bob Dylan while jamming onstage at various times with the Violent Femmes, Spin Doctors, Phish's Trey Anastasio and Blues Travellers.

In an effort to build his own niche as an artist, Hollister has developed a gruff yet charming voice and a delivery that's pleasantly conversational. Every song feels like an intimate conversation, whether it's couched in an intimate acoustic arrangement or a frenetic rock setting. He puts his performance skills to fine use on Life produced by John Alagia (Dave Matthews Band, Vertical Horizon, John Mayer).

Alagia did more than merely man the board for this set; he also contributed keyboards, manddolin, and guitar on a variety of tracks. Filling out the musical lineup is percussionist Giovanni Hidalgo (Santana, Tito Puente, Paul Simon) guitarist Bob Coons (Jerry Garcia) and Jack Oneill of local band Jackopierce, who lends vocals on "Dream Until you Fade."

The album's title track takes listeners on a journey of the simple pleasures of life and everyday reality. Meanwhile, "Vineyard," tells a sweet tale of summer love, while "Laugh" is wonderfully playful ditty that begs to be heard in a live environment. The set's strongest tune "Dream Until you Fade," offers a sublime melody filled with hypnotic harmonizing and lushly layered guitars.

Hollister is currently rehearsing for a round of gigs that will see him travelling throughout the Midwest in the coming months.

Bio

Hot off press: Chad wins first prize in Billboard's 2003 Songwriter Contest for "Jesus, Bon Jovi and Tarzan" in alt/ rock division!

Bio:When you hear about CHAD in American politics, you think of the scandalous, electoral brouhaha involving the tiny rectangles punched out from voter data cards. When you hear about CHAD in American music, you can bet it’s about the charismatic singer-songwriter on his way to musical fame as a master of the lyric and groove.

Bursting on to the music scene out of his native Vermont, Chad Hollister cut his musical teeth gigging with Burlington’s own jam band Phish. Chad has opened for rock masters Tom Petty and Bob Dylan on Levi’s SFX concert tour, and he’s jammed with modern, pop greats like The Violent Femmes, The Spin Doctors, Jonathan Mover (Joe Satriani/Aretha Franklin), Trey Anastasio and Blues Traveler.

Starting out as a percussionist, Hollister was musically inspired by Santana, Bob Marley, The Police and James Brown. Chad’s rhythmic guitar playing demonstrates the influence of those pop icons in his seamless weaving of acoustic rock, reggae-funk and melodic groove.

Chad’s infectious vocals are passionate, compelling and honest. His percussive, acoustic-rock style demands the audience to get up and move. His songs are clever, infusing humor, love and life into the message. When Chad plays live, it's musical alchemy imbuing spontaneous combustion and eclectic energy into the crowd. The music reminds fans of the songs they love to sing, by artists like matchbox twenty, the Dave Matthews Band and Train; yet, at the same time, Chad’s music is unique, distinctly impressing his passion and love for his art and the life which inspires it.

Fresh off the road from a national 2001 tour, Hollister hit the studio with producer John Alagia (also helmed Grammy winner John Mayer, Dave Matthews Band, Edwin McCain, Jason Mraz, and more) and together they created Chad’s new album Life. This is the fourth album under Chad’s belt and contains some of his most moving work yet.

The band includes producer Alagia, who contributes keyboards, mandolin and guitar on a variety of tracks; master percussionist Giovanni Hidalgo, who has toured with Santana, Tito Puente, Dizzy Gillespie, Paul Simon and Mickey Hart, to name a few. On guitar is Bob Coons of Jerry Garcia Band fame, and Jack O’Neill of Jackopierce lends vocals on "Dream Until you Fade."

The album’s title track takes you on a journey of the simple pleasures of life and of every day reality. It crescendos into this age-old Zen message, and echoes in the powerful chorus "…this is life." "Vineyard" tells a beautiful story, in its acoustic simplicity, about a vacation romance--rendered with a strong hook--sure to catch the heart of any and all who have fallen in love during a summer by the shore. "Laugh" is a pure and infectious tune, illustrated with grit and wit that impels the listener to just "…laugh about it." "Jesus, Bon Jovi & Tarzan" is a clever twist and turn of lyric about love, and the bridge will definitely capture you. "Dream Until You Fade" is a sublimely ironic melody, filled with hypnotic harmonizing and lush guitar, and, after sampling its lullaby, you too can "fade until you dream." "Keep On" is funky and self-expressive, spiced with sax and congas, and sings aloud about just what this artist plans to do… "Keep on keepin' on"!
