Photos: Rock Fashion Show at Firewater
Mon Oct 15, 2007 at 06:18:10 AM

Strutting for the troops. (Travis Awalt)When Dallas band ChalkLign e-mailed us about the Operation Rock the Troops fashion show, we couldn't resist. What can we say? We love benefit shows and fashion. Our photographer Travis Awalt hit up the Saturday night, Oct. 13, event at Firewater. He made sure to fully document the lovely models strutting in skimpy clothes (including underwear), and managed to offer a couple band shots, too. See what you missed in our slideshow.
The show was also ChalkLign's CD release party for Cain's Theory. We didn't forget about the band. The disc is currently spinning in DC-9 CD players. So, watch the blog for a review. -- Chelsea Ide

DSM: I want to start by asking you guys about your musical influences. Who are a few of the bands that really inspire you?

CL: DEFTONES, DREDG, TOOL, R H C P, PINK FLOYD, INCUBUS. WE HAVE A TON OF MUSICAL INFLUINCE I AM A DEPECHE MODE GUY

DSM: I am a big fan of the band TOOL. When I read your myspace bio it drew me in because of what you said about being inspired by the world around you. Can you give us some tips on tuning out the bullshit and tuning in the good stuff?

CL: THE BEST THING YOU CAN DO IS NOT GIVE A SHIT. THE ONLY THINGS THAT REALLY GET YOU DOWN ARE THINGS YOU CANT CHANGE THAT YOU WASTE HOURS A DAY TRYING TO CHANGE ONLY MAKIN YOU ABSOLUTLEY MISERABLE. WHATS FUNNY IS ALOT OF PEOPLE MISTAKE THE I DONT GIVE A SHIT ADDITUDE FOR CONFIDENCE.

DSM: It seems like you guys know everyone out here. Are you from Dallas?
CL: WE ARE FROM DALLAS, PLANO AREA BUT WE KNOW ALOT OF PEOPLE BECAUSE WE HAVE BEEN AROUND FOR A MINUTE. I USED TO GO TO DEEP ELLUM EVERY WEEK JUST TO NETWORK AND POLITIK WITH THE OTHER BANDS. YOU NEVER KNOW WHOS GOIN TO GET PICKED UP AND WHOS NOT SO PLAY WITH EVERYONE YOU CAN. ALWAYS RESPECT WHAT THEY ARE DOIN AND DONT SIT AROUND AND TALK SHIT ABOUT THE OTHER LOCAL BANDS CAUSE YOU NEVER KNOW.

DSM: I get the feeling that "Unclean" is really personal.Whithout getting gross, what's up with the disease reference?

CL: ITS REALLY IN TERMS OF A MENTAL TYPE THINGY. JUST LIKE I FELT LIKE I WAS SICK WITH A LYING DISORDER. BUT THAT EXCUSE DOESNT WORK ON THE GIRLS I ALREADY TRIED.

DSM: I am familiar with what a chalkline is. Could you try to explain the significance of such a straight-line image in the name of your band?

CL: NOT REALLY A STRAGHT LINE REFERENCE MORE OF A LINE IN LIFE THAT YOU DONT KNOW IF YOU WANNA CROSS.

DSM: When are you guys going to put out a full-length album?

CL: IT LOOKS LIKE MARCH WILL BE THE MONTH FOR NOW BUT THAT DOESNT MEAN IT WONT CHANGE

DSM: So, its pretty crazy that Alfred lives by me. Do you think there is a greater reasoning behind this weird coincidence?

CL: YEAH THE RIGHT PRICE ON RENT IS A BIG FACTOR.

DSM: A lot of bands have certain words or phrases that their fans shout out at the shows. If we go to a ChalkLign show are there any words, sounds, or phrases that we should know in advance?

CL: WHO THE FUCK IS CHALK-LIG-N!

DSM: ChalkLign is obviously not your average rock band. Beside an album, what other kinds of artistic projects are you in working on in the future?

CL: ME AND MANNY HAVE ANOTHER LITTLE MUSIC THING WE WORK ON FROM TIME TO TIME. KINDA TEAM SLEEPISH WEIRD TRANCE LIKE ROCK SOMETHING. I DONT KNOW. BUT CHALKLIGN IS THE FIRST BABY NO TIME FOR BULLSHIT YA KNOW!

Bio

ChalkLign was born in the summer of 2003, from the desire of singer Chase Hemingway to create something original and inspirational. After performing with several different artists for a year, he came across a very unique guitarist, Manuel Romo III, who has since captured the heart and soul of what ChalkLign is. The two worked together, attempting to invent their own sound with several other artists until January of 2005, when a drummer Matt Pfiffner, joined the band and pushed them to another level. A year later, Alfred Cox, joined them on bass and completed the group.

ChalkLign has played shows in the D/FW metroplex and Austin at a plethora of venues. They won the Alex Gray Contest for “Best Song” on MySpace.com with their song Unclean, competing against 200 other bands.

Love what you do, do what you love.
We were born for this.
