The best kept secret in music
Press
The melodic rock band Chalk, which actually heralds locally from my little corner of Alabama, has recently hit the studio and put together an EP dubbed Oceanic Oversoul. In this landscape of terrible hardcore bands that litter the area; this band has become a shining beacon of hope to the ever-burgeoning music scene. A lot of these guys have been playing together since high school, and know the ins and outs of how the others play; it really shows in the nuances of a live setting, when you can really see the songs evolve on stage.
This five song EP Is a testament to the DIY attitude, and shows just how well a band can do while running on nothing more than talent, and determination. If comparisons had to be made, I’d shade these gents as fairly Tool-esque; though they most definitely have a style all their own. Highlights from this effort include the catchy “Zen Koans,” to the near opus of a title track; this disc is solid gold all the way through.
This is a band that isn’t afraid to follow a melody into a six-plus minute masterpiece, or merely take what they can get and make a catchy, literate 4 minute rocker. Either way, they do it with a level of skill and poise that any band alive would die for. To snag a copy of the EP, hit up the band’s official website. You can stream a few tunes from their MySpace page. - soundthesirens.com
