"Chalwa to perform..."

"When Chalwa hits the stage, get ready for a fusion of sounds all wrapped up in a roots reggae beat that will make all ages dance and have a truly positive experience."

- Black Mountain News

"Belly Up heads to Backstreet's for the band Chalwa"

Have you had enough reggae lately? Are you tired of going to your favorite local music venue and finding a never ending flow of original reggae bands, performing day in and day out? Well, you probably aren’t, because — as you know — finding an original reggae group anywhere near Anderson is almost impossible.

It’s even rarer to hear of an original reggae band that doesn’t just stick to the stock sounds of Bob Marley and Peter Tosh. If you’re looking for an original reggae band, and you really don’t feel like taking a one-night trip to Jamaica, then you may want to check out Chalwa...
- Independent Mail Anderson, SC

"Asheville's groove is deeper than you think"

"When you see bands like... Chalwa, Your Mama's Big Fat Booty Band, Circatree, Ethos, Laura Reed and Deep Pocket, and Jeff Sipe - LISTEN UP!" - Mountain Xpress

"Roots Reggae"

"Asheville's hottest reggae draw!" - Shout Magazine

"Thanks for a great show..."

Bio

Chalwa has been located in Asheville, in the mountains of western North Carolina, since 2006. Their sound is heavily influenced by roots they have established through years of family ties in Jamaica. Sonically Chalwa draws from all sources and genres, but on stage and in the studio the expression is pure roots reggae. Perhaps this is what links Chalwa so closely to the spirit of reggae music in Jamaica; it is the comfort of and understanding of self that allows one to transcend sufferation and stereotypes and create something truly original and powerful. Chalwa brings to the stage“a fusion of sounds all wrapped up in a roots reggae beat that will make all ages dance and have a truly positive experience (Black Mountain News).”

As we look to 2008 Chalwa is coming off a year in which they performed over 100 shows throughout the United States and Jamaica, in support of artists such as Steel Pulse, Bambu Station, Michael Franti, Soldiers of Jah Army, Niyo Rah, Ras Alan, Mickey Mills, Jah Lightning and Thunder, Dubconscious, the Overtakers, Larry Keel, and more.
