"Producer Spotlight: Chance The Closer"

With countless releases coming to the people every day, It’s gets tougher to make music engaging enough to hold the people. If you add in the element of the music being an instrumental it raises the difficulty level even further, leaving only room for special talent to flourish. That special talent is Chance The Closer. An innovative soundman with a wide array of sounds to make the world move. When we heard his song “Get Money” we knew we wanted to know more about this creative. He was gracious enough to take time to answer some questions for us. The Producer Spotlight is on Chance The Closer.

Who is Chance The Closer the Producer?

I am a music addicted bipolar heartbroken heartbreak 90’s kid who secretly wants to be the white Kanye. As far as my sound goes though I would describe it as funk pop-house dubstep trap fusion. Most of the time I don’t know what the hell I am doing. I am just trying to have as much fun as possible and spread as much music and joy as I can.

How did you get into producing?

When I was in high school I got MTV Music Generator 3 for Christmas and that’s probably where it all started. It was an xbox game that allowed you to make beats and remix songs. I was addicted. I spent a lot of weekends trying to make the best party music instead of actually having a social life. Then when I was in college, I went to Columbia College Chicago, I made a few songs with some friends in between classes and parties but nothing of note. It kinda stopped there for a while, I focused on my acting career and moved to Los Angeles.

I pursued acting for seven years, got my real estate license, got my heart broken then moved to a farm in the middle of nowhere Oregon. Being isolated forced me to look back at what made me truly happy and that was making music. So a few years ago I dove back into mixing and haven’t looked back.

What production software do you use and why?

FL Studio because it was cheaper when I first started and I got used to it. It’s user friendly yet incredibly capable and complex.

What’s your creative process for creating “Just Money”?

If I am being 100% I wanted to make a song that would bring me more money. Law of Attraction I wanted to put it out there so that the green would start flowing my way. It is my money plan. It is actually a part of a song trilogy including “Cheque” & “Paper”. The way my label, Big Tunes, releases stuff though they didn’t quite line it up right. They are all published but they dropped at different times.

I believe we shape our world with our thoughts and the energy we put out there so I wanted to make a song that promoted prosperity but didn’t like flaunt it. Like I want people to listen to it and picture themselves with a ton of money. I want the listener to be the focus and feel prosperous if that makes any sense.

What was your favorite project to work on?

Favorite project I worked on so far would probably be “Dumber Than The President” it’s a much more hardcore dubsteppy song but the message is clear and it pisses people off, it pisses the people off that I want to piss off.

Which artist would you love to collab with and why?

I would like to work with people from the opposite end of the musical spectrum because I think that is truly how one grows. T.I. is and has always been one of my favorite artists I would love to work with him “Whatever You Like” was my college anthem. Hilary Duff because I’ve been in love with her since I was twelve and she has a phenomenal voice. Backstreet Boys because deep down everyone knows they love them and I think it would be a blast to make a super poppy song with them. Michael Buble because I would love to make a headbanging song with a crooner. Even like Kid Rock just for shits and giggles. There are a million undiscovered artists I would love to collab with as well I just haven’t met them yet.

What’s next for Chance The Closer?

Currently, I am working on my next album I am trying to tie in vocals from old movies, every song in the album will have snippets from movies from the 40s-50s. During this pandemic, I’ve been watching a lot of black and white movies when I go down to check and take care of my grandma and it kind of inspired me. She hates my music but she can barely hear and hates everything that was released after 1959 anyway so what the hell she know. I am also working on a number of projects with two artists Ballew & Ms.Wndrlnd who are phenomenal.

Ballew is located in Virginia and she is into metal and Ms.Wndrlnd is up in Vancouver and she is into trippy trance drum and bass. Their styles are completely opposite from one another but mesh very well with my sound. When the world opens up I am going to go on tour.

"WHEN THE PARTY CALLS: THE EDM RAP ANTHEM YOUR PLAYLISTS HAVE BEEN MISSING"

Sunday, Sep 8, 2019 @ 4:09 PM

Chance the Closer’s latest release “When the Party Calls” is a full on aural attack on the senses when you hit play. There’s no gently luring you into the chaos of the EDM Rap track which has plenty of intricate progressions throughout the mix. By keeping the beats unpredictable It would seem that Chance found the perfect way to constantly feed euphoria into the anthemics of the mix which has been polished to perfection.

The US-based up and coming Rap artist clearly had no intention of assimilating any other Urban, Alt, or EDM artist when he created the hard tempo hit which is all too tempting to crank up and let the feverish mix envelop you. Expect a smooth cocktail of elements of Future Pop, Balkan Beats and Hard Style.

"Outta Your Fkn Mind"

Sunday, Sep 8, 2019

Whether you love or hate the musical direction EDM is currently taking, the single “Outta Your Fkn Mind”, which precedes the “Little Big Moves” album by Chance The Closer, just sounds good, and shows how superb dance music can still be made. Chance did an expert job in the studio, and the basslines and percussion are outstanding. What appeals most to me is the blend of dance, funk and electronica that results in great music to dance, work, drive or chill to. The blend of instruments, beats and voices, fit into in a warm familiar sound with all the catchiness of the electronic effects and pop hooks. It works flawlessly as listening music or a party rocker.

Between the robotic techno of “Take My BASS”, the powerful funky momentum of “Outta Your Fkn Mind”, as well as the syncopated beat and cutely orchestrated whistling motif on “Cranium”, the lush, gorgeous sounds churned out by Chance The Closer are just stunning.

The single “Outta Your Fkn Mind”, written after living through an abusive situation, is a scrumptious taste of updated 70s disco-funk alla Daft Punk. This is what you’d call intelligent music that is well thought out – it grasps from the past and points to the future. It’s full of quality goodness. I particularly love the percussion parts all the way through.

It really glues the instrumentation together. The bass track is impeccably played, groove-rich, and forces you to move. The vocals are robotic, hence they have that ominous and mesmerizing effect, working perfectly together with the chimy synth parts. It’s literally full of infectious sounds with a well-engineered mix and vocals that provide an odd yet unique musical adventure.

Chance The Closer has an all-round infectious and eclectic set of songs in his catalog. Every track tells a different story, and the music is constructed in such a way as to perfectly deliver each message while remaining incredibly catchy. Pick any song in his set and it sounds a lot like the best dance music from back in the club days when the beat and melody were so perfect you could dance all night and not even feel it.

Really, Chance’s electronic music is so solid that I found myself hitting the replay button on a couple of favorites and listened to it over and over. I haven’t gotten bored with hearing it on repeat yet, which is pretty amazing for me.

A part of that magic has to do with the production which is insanely crisp. Chance The Closer spends a lot of time creating the perfect bassline and drumbeat in his tracks, which is really what gets your backside moving on the floor.

Most of today’s up and coming producers concentrate on their keyboard sounds, and vocal hooks in the chorus, to charm audiences, but almost totally ignore the importance of having a perfect ass-moving bassline that glues itself to a foot stomping drumbeat. Checkout how Chance The Closer, perfects this formula on “Outta Your Fkn Mind”, as well as “The Frequency Of Funky”.

Chance The Closer seems clearly more interested in wearing out the dancefloors, than he is with climbing up the radio pop charts. There’s no doubt in my mind that the album, “Little Big Moves” will serve to solidify the already rarified air surrounding Chance The Closer right now. In the meantime turn up the volume and ride with “Outta Your Fkn Mind”!
