Not ‘Indie Crap’

Four years ago in Hattiesburg, in a house called “The Yellow Submarine”—named after The Beatles 1968 animated feature film—four young men began their musical journey, forming the band Chance Fisher. Joel Vance, 25, plays drums and vocals; Adam Kelly, 26, keys; Sam Adcock, 26, bass; and Judson Vance, 27, guitar and vocals.
“Chance Fisher is an entity that we created to represent the front person in the band; a fictional character,” Adcock says.
Each member of the band creates his own role in the group that together pays homage to classic rock ‘n’ roll. With idols like Radiohead, Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles and The Doors, these guys dub their special musical sauce psychedelic rock. The band members agree that for the most part, their music is improvised and is a true collaboration. They also say that their band operates under democratic rule, and they all rest on one belief: “There is something kind of timeless about the kind of music we play. You can’t dance to that indie crap,” Adcock says.
The musical influence of the band members’ own parents have shaped this mentality. Sam Adcock is the son of classic-rock DJ David Adcock of Z-106 in Jackson, and Judson and Joel Vance’s father played banjo. When asked if any of the band members had aspirations other than music, almost everyone’s answer is a satisfying “no.”
“I didn’t know what aspiration was until I got into music,” Kelly says.
One band member, however, was overly ambitious early in life. “I wanted to be president, but I ruined that opportunity way too early,” Adcock says, laughing.
After four years of developing their sound and sacrificing financially, the band unveiled their new album, “Nocturne Attics,” in 2007. The album’s name partly hints toward the late nights spent working on their project. With the help of a Macintosh and microphones, it took about 10 months to record the album and another two to three months to print it. The album’s psychedelic sound displays influences from almost every one of their musical inspirations.
With the help and encouragement of friends, family and hometown establishments, Chance Fisher has been able to make the music that they want, their way. They stress how supportive their families have been, both emotionally and financially. Fortunately as well for the band, Bennie’s Boom Boom Room in Hattiesburg is conducive to their sound.
“We can do what we want to do there. (The owner) doesn’t really give a damn as long as the crowd is enjoying it,” Adcock says. Chance Fisher also travels to Jackson frequently, playing at Martin’s.
Although being signed to a big record label would be great, the guys say they are dedicated to maintaining their style and creative freedoms.
“We’re trying to get to that point while being true to our music,” Kelly says.
The group’s long-term goals are to be able to create and perform their music, while supporting their families and having fun doing it. As long as they can get people up and dancing to the music they love, everything is all right.

Local band does good. These guys are the staple local band around the town where I live. It's more like a cult following, but if you heard what they can do you will surely understand. Their music is an incredible mix of psychedelia, funk, progressive jam, and the best part is, it's mostly improvised. The most promising avenue of rock's revival, in my opinion, is in the hard-edge electric blues scene represented most prominently by... The Bailey Brothers, Chance Fisher...If one of these guys makes it out of the swamp, you can say you heard it here first. - Figandmint.com

Chance Fisher began in 2002 in Hattiesburg Mississippi, and included two brothers, Judson and Joel, from Tupelo, and a sit in bass player. After a few months of playing open mics around town, Adam Kelly showed up and immediately made a vital musical impact on the band. The band began playing more gigs and spreading their love of music to all who would hear. After the first year, Adam, Joel, and Judson, felt as though something needed to change. A permanent bass player had to be solidified and Sam Adcock came in and filled this void. Sam's addition not only inspired the other members but also vaulted the band into another level with his musical knowledge and playing ability. These four musicians have been playing together for five years now and have grown together personally as well as professionally. The music itself reflects these close relationships, and exemplifies an understanding of music that surpasses many modern day rock bands.
Chance Fisher's immediate influences include The Beatles and Pink Floyd, but also extend to bands such as Medeski, Martin, and Wood, Ween, Radiohead, and many others. Each member brings a different musical background to the table which mixes to create a unique and creative sound. The band enjoys improvising and letting the music be their guide through rock n roll to funk, psychedelia, to bluegrass. The band thrives on its live performances and continues to play in ways that challenges not only its members, but its audiences as well. Chance Fisher has recently travelled to Colorado, and played in Denver, Colorado Springs, Manitou Springs, and Green Mountain Falls. They have created a unique scene in the south of Mississippi that allows them to play alongside bands from other areas of the country. Bands have come from New Jersey, Colorado, and Alabama to play with these guys and more collaborations are certain. The band believes in a communal scene that offers original music to fans that are willing to come and support these ideals. Original music is a necessity, and writing and creating new music is the driving force that makes this clock tick.
Chance Fisher now has the nucleus that is needed to not only survive, but thrive on the road of music which has seen the demise of many of its peers. With four dedicated members Chance Fisher is looking to change the face of modern rock music, and make a positive impact on the music scene in general.
