"“These Things” is clearly primed for the world stage."

Derek Ryan’s second full-length outing “These Things,” which casts the Chicago-based singer/songwriter in an ensemble setting as Channel Theory, showcases the handsome entertainer as sensitive poet, provocative guitarist, master melody-maker and most of all, versatile vocalist. From the tender musings of “I’m Still Here,” in which the troubadour reflects, “I’ve chased eluding dreams and watched all pain recede/Love lost and re-found, sometimes it takes these things…” to the rough-and-tumble instrumental grit of “Work of Art” or midtempo pop/rocker “Press Start To End,” Ryan conjures the likes of such disparate figureheads as Duncan Sheik, Radiohead, Howard Jones and Morrissey, while etching his own novel signature throughout the 10-cut project. While his work has been featured on such TV shows as “The Hills,” “The Real World” and “Road Rules,” this inspired collection serves as a proper launching pad for one guy who does it all: He played all instruments on the demo tracks, wrote lyrics and melodies, strums and sings. “These Things” is clearly primed for the world stage. - Billboard Discoveries
