"Vocal Powerhouse Puts Connecticut on Musical Map"

Bristol Native Rising Up Musical Charts

Thursday, November 13, 2008 9:54 PM EST

By JENNIFER SHAFER WOOD, Special to Weekend

BRISTOL — Chantele DiBrava is a pop rock ’n’ roll diva with a five-octave vocal range and a vivacious performance style. She sings with soul and jams with a flare that’s all her own.

Born and raised in Bristol, she holds her family close and credits her mother, Pheobe Doucette, for having a big effect on her music.

"My mom was a big influence, you know, as far as music. She had a variety of stuff and exposed me to a lot of different genres — from Sarah Brightman to Barbra Streisand to theater stuff," DiBrava explained.

From a very young age, DiBrava had a gift for performance, singing Whitney Houston and Pat Benatar songs for neighborhood audiences.

At 14, she performed in a Broadway play, and has traveled to Russia to perform. She missed out on the regular activities of adolescence, like the prom, DiBrava says, but adds it was worth the sacrifice.

Her mother remembers, "When she was 3, she would sing into a spoon, pretending it was a microphone. All she ever wanted to do was sing and perform. I am very proud of her," Doucette said.

DiBrava’s close friend from childhood, Kendra Hanchett, remembers, "At sleepovers, Chantele was the singer and I was the dancer."

"At my wedding, she was a guest, but got up to sing; she made me cry."

DiBrava is a fresh voice in the rock ’n’ roll/popular music genre, unlike today’s pop rock stars, DiBrava has a personality. She’s not an image; she’s an artist with an image. Her style is unique and her voice is real.

She has over 2 million hits on her MySpace page and her first single, "Turn Me On" with Jim Jones, climbed into the top 25 on the MySpace music charts, and made it to Digiwaxx’s top honor.

"For the No. 1 position on Digiwaxx, Chantele beat out noteworthy platinum recording artists Fat Joe (Virgin records), R. Kelly (Jive/Zomba), T.I. (Atlantic), and Lil Wayne (Cash Money/Universal.) Representatives from Digiwaxx report Chantele’s position as being the highest on the chart for an unsigned artist," sites LAsThe Place.com.

Her first album, "Elecktro Glam Rockstar," was released this month and available at Best Buy stores, www.bestbuy.com, www.cdbaby.com and www.itunes.com.

She had a CD release party Oct. 29 at The Space in Hamden. DiBrava put on an excellent show. Dressed in black and playing a hot-pink glittering guitar, she rocked the house with her original tunes off her new album, and a couple of Pat Benatar covers.

Her voice is sultry, deep and full of energy. She can hit a low note with a rich soulful sound, and she can hit high note like an operatic soprano. She mesmerizes the audience with her rock ’n’ roll flare, dancing, singing, and jamming on a pink guitar.

"Very powerful!" exclaimed Phil Bullaro of Portland, after seeing her performance.

She’s got soul and it comes through in her voice, performance style and lyrics.

"She’s good. I mean she’s real good! Some people do not sound good live, they only sound good on the CD, but she’s the best I’ve ever heard live. I loved it," said Melinda Burns of Rocky Hill.

When DiBrava performed her song, "I Can’t Let Go," her passion was evident in her singing: "Purple doves float through the orange-colored clouds. A picture of you inside my mind, memories of you and I," and the audience swayed with the rhythm.

This powerhouse diva is a savvy artist, keeping independent from record labels. With her manager of two years, Kenneth Stewart of KMS Firm Worldwide, she is re-inventing the music industry. Instead of being represented by a record label, DiBrava is getting endorsements from multimillion-dollar corporations. Steve Madden is one of her endorsers, sponsoring five free downloadable tracks on her MySpace page.

And the maker of her hot pink guitar, Daisy Rock Guitar, is also sponsoring her. "As an independent artist, you can do so much more with these companies if you have a really good artist. They’re willing to partner with you and help you get out there," Stewart explained.

They put the records together and let companies know what they’re doing. They’re reinventing a business model, according to Stewart.

That way, DiBrava remains independent and can produce her music her way — without being told what to do and when to do it, which is typical in a traditional record label deals.

DiBrava is preparing for her first tour sponsored by Gibson Guitar, "Women of Rock."

The tour will take her to cities across the country like Austin, Chicago, New York and Los Angeles. There, she will host concerts with two local performers from each city.

It’s all about women emerging in rock ’n’ roll. "It’s a lifestyle tour promoting women and rock," Stewart said.

Lifestyle tours happen in metropolitan areas where artists are introduced to the tastemakers — the movers and shakers in the industry, and it’s a way for the people in the are - Middletown Press

Chantele DiBrava will get the weekend off so she can sing at the Super Bowl in Tampa.

Like many entertainment hopefuls, Chantele DiBrava juggles a career and a day job waiting tables. The young singer never thought she would be lucky enough to get an invite to perform at a Super Bowl event.

But that's exactly what she'll be doing in Tampa Sunday, the day of Super Bowl XLIII, which you can see on WNBC News4.

"I called the NFL literally a thousand times, and then finally someone called me back and put me in touch with the host committee," DiBrava said.

The Connecticut native has been a server at Osso Buco in downtown Manhattan for two years. Owner Nino Selimaj treated Chantele and her friends to lunch to celebrate her big news.

"Throughout the years, I've had many hopefuls work for me," Selimaj said. "I'm happy to know one is finally getting someplace."

"East Village waitress Chantele DiBrava performs at Super Bowl"

East Village waitress Chantele DiBrava performs at Super Bowl

By NICOLE LYN PESCE

Friday, January 30th 2009, 4:00 AM

Chantele DiBrava
Two weeks ago, she was waiting tables. But tonight, she becomes a Super Bowl star.

Chantele DiBrava, an aspiring singer/songwriter from the East Village, opens the football festivities in Tampa Friday performing "The Star-Spangled Banner" at the Tailgate Party Throwdown honoring military veterans, followed by a second set with her bandmates tonight and a closing performance tomorrow.

"It's definitely a dream come true!" trills DiBrava, 25, who's been singing most of her life. "I've been struggling to try to make things happen."

By day she bused tables at Osso Buco in the West Village, often bursting into song in the dining room. By night, she played venues like The Bitter End and The Zipper Factory.

After performing at Madison Square Garden for the Knicks in 2007, she decided to aim for this year's Super Bowl.

"I figured it was a long shot, but I just kept calling and calling, and they actually called me back!" she says.

DiBrava shared a little taste of her talent last Tuesday, belting out the national anthem for friends and family in the restaurant where she worked for two years.

Though only 5 feet tall, the tiny singer has a five-octave range that shakes the rafters.

"People love her. She's my best waitress," boasts Osso Buco owner Nino Selimaj. "Hopefully, this is her big break. But if she doesn't make it, she can come back anytime to work as a waitress!"

DiBrava's only disappointment is that she's not singing for Gang Green or Big Blue. "I was hoping it would be the Giants and the Jets, Eli [Manning] and Brett [Favre]," she says, "but you know what? New York is still representing, because I'm going!"

"10 Female Youtube singers to keep an eye on"

It's no secret that youtube is becoming the new A&R. More and more artists are being discovered and signed on the social site every day. Waste your time sending demos to a label if you want but this has become the best and cheapest way to get in the laps of label executives. Here are a couple I've stumbled upon that are under the radar. Most don't even have a lot of views but I definitely want to hear some original music from and I'm hoping it's coming soon.

1. Chloe and Halle - 2 sisters that are a couple years apart but if they were the same height would look like twins. Their arrangements and interpretations of popular songs is so refreshing. Check them out taking on Lil' Wayne's "How To Love" here.

2. Melodi J - I just love her tone and delivery. Check out her covering Beyonce's "Best Thing I Never Had here.

3. Chantele DiBrava - She's an old soul and has some really vintage looking Aretha Franklin song covers up right now. Nothing like an acoustic bluesy performance. Check her out here.

"An Interview with Chantele DiBrava"

How has growing up in Bristol, CT affected you, and your career?
Growing up in CT really shaped me as a person. I was always surrounded by great people who taught me great values. CT is very laid back vibe, unlike New York or LA, so I definitely approach things a little differently than most out here. There's not much to do, which left me plenty of time to get into my music as a child. Being there definitely kept me out of trouble.
How did you get into music?
I always loved to sing and entertain people from a very young age. My mother will tell you that I was 3 when she really realized that I had a natural gift. That's when she started teaching me different songs. We would act things out, go to the mall and talk in different accents!
Did you ever take lessons, or are you just a natural talent?
I did take some singing lesions at the age of 12. My mother wanted to expose me to the classical side of music like opera, theater, and some jazz, so she found me a great teacher to introduce me to all those elements. She always wanted me to know as much as I could about what was out there so that in choosing my path I would know exactly what I wanted.
I know you can sing, but can you play any instruments? Guitar and learning piano.
How long have you been performing? Since the age of 4.
Do you ever get nervous before a performance?
Of course! Every time! But hanging out with my band on the way to shows really relaxes me. We laugh and joke on the whole ride.
You've had a lot of Myspace and Internet success, How does that translate into real success for you?
I think the Internet is amazing especially for independent artists like myself. It gives you the opportunity to reach people that you could never reach without a record label, where as back in the days would be impossible. I have booked quite a few shows from people on the Internet. When fans hit me and tell me my music is awesome, or they love my pictures, to me that's success!
Has the Internet helped you, or hindered you?
It's an amazing tool and great way to build a fan base, so I would say it was a great help!
Do you think the Internet is changing the way new artists such as yourself put themselves out there? How about how artists tour?
How do you think the Internet is affecting the music industry? (a positive change,or a negative change).
The Internet is amazing, especially websites like Myspace because I gain new fans everyday from around the world! It has really given me the opportunities like touring, selling music and connecting with people. I think that anyone can be global now and that's what the internet has done for the music industry.
You have some songs about celebrities, what inspired you to use their lives as a basis for your songs?
My song "True Hollywood Story" actually started as a joke in the studio, but ended up becoming big on the Internet. Most people listen to the chorus and think it's all about Lindsey Lohan, but if you listen to the lyrics it's actually a cautionary tale. I want kids to know that underneath all the hype this business is still a business and isn't not all it's cracked up to be. "So listen to your mommy or you might be my next story"! LOL
Do you closely follow the lives of celebrities?
I'm no different than any other person. I love to get caught up in the gossip.
Why do you think celebrities are put under the microscope in society?
I think it's just part of the job. People want to know about you.
Can celebrities be considered heroes?
I suppose to some people.
What do you think of people who "worship" their favorite celebs?
To each his own!
Do you read tabloids?
I'm more of a glance-at-the-cover-in-the-aisle-of-the-grocery-store kind of girl.
What do you think of the paparazzi? Do you think the paparazzi/reporters go too far?
I think the paparazzi give great exposure!
You're voice/style has been compared to Gwen Stefani and Blondie, were you at all influenced by them? What are your (other) influences?
Definitely a big fan of them both! I am also a big Pat Benatar, Mariah and Whitney fan. I was influenced by them all.
What is your favorite album?
Thriller
What is your favorite song?
"I Can't Let Go" from my debut album Electro Glam Rockstar. It's the one with the heart next to it.
