Bio

The members of Chapel Club think of music as something to be experienced, rather than simply heard. Formed in the dying days of 2007 by guitarist Michael Hibbert and bassist Liam Arklie, the rest of the band came together through mutual friends and a shared desire to do something different: something that had nothing to do with gimmicks, scenes or slogans and everything to do with melody, integrity and emotional impact.

After a period spent writing and rehearsing, the band started playing live in the autumn of 2009 – and their shows have already won them a devoted following, eager to experience the intensity and intelligence of tracks like debut limited single ‘Surfacing’ and live favourite ‘O Maybe I’ for themselves.

‘Surfacing’ surfaced on NME radio who took the band to their collective hearts resulting in the track being the band’s debut single. The release also picked up plays on both 6Music and Radio 1 and saw the band tipped in the likes of the NME and The Fly.

2010 saw the band spread their wings with tours across the UK and Europe, and further enhanced their reputation for throwing gigs in obscure spaces which have included an ‘acid Rasta’ West Indian pub, an Aldgate apartment and disused warehouse spaces.

The Guardian described them thus “…they play rock of the epic variety: guitars that ring, drums that thunder, and so on.”

The Sunday Times were moved to say “…Chapel club look like a very interesting prospect indeed.’

February saw the release of ‘O Maybe I’ on East City Records and consolidated the band’s upward trajectory with radio again proving supportive with airplay. The band then spent time in and out of the studio working on their debut album with producer Paul Epworth, the end result to those who have heard tracks is something that will do their reputation no harm at all.

With a healthy schedule of summer festival appearances, the recent release of single ‘Five Trees’ and being confirmed on the Emerge NME Radar tour in the autumn it looks like the band will see out the year like the last…on a high!
