Bio

Charanga Si was conceived in May 2008 when two Cuban immigrants, missing the authentic sounds of their homeland, decided to form a band with musicians in the Austin area. Their intent was to share traditional Cuban music with the world! Currently, Charanga Si is Texas’ only traditional Charanga dance band. Charanga groups became popular in Cuba during the 40's and 50's and feature percussion, violin, and flute. Charangas are the mother of all Salsa music and are still popular today. Individually, the members of Charanga Si have played in some of the greatest charanga groups both in Cuba and the United States, performed in orchestras around the world, and have worked in numerous other genres of music. They bring their unique experiences together to take you on musical journey back to Havana, Cuba. Get ready to dance!

About the director:

Anel Delba Martinez began his musical studies at young age in his hometown of Camagüey, Cuba. While completing his Masters Degree in violin performance, continued to play professionally as a violinist in Orquesta Sinfonica de Camagüey, as well as in many of the local charangas. After receiving his diploma, he moved to Havana where he played with played ICRT (Cuban Institute of Radio and Television) Orquesta for one year. After that, he played with some of Cubas most important charangas including Orquesta America, and Orquesta Sensacion. In 2001 he formed his own group which he took to Mexico where they lived and played until 2007, when he decided to pursue more opportunities in the United States. A year later he brought together various musicians from Texas, New York and Cuba to form Charanga Si.
