"Charity Turner's Our Secrets offers a pleasant mish-mash of acoustic and groove rock numbers"

Charity Turner's Our Secrets offers a pleasant mish-mash of acoustic and groove rock numbers

It’s amazing how a sojourn to a remote tropical place can help you collect your thoughts and get a hold on what’s coming next in your life. Sydney, Australia-based singer-songwriter Charity Turner did this a few years back, and the result has been her breaking away from the Gospel-tinged music of her youth and embracing a wilder, free-spirited sort of pop rock that is sure to set you to dancing. The five songs on Our Secrets are a pleasant mish-mash of acoustic and groove rock numbers that form a pretty good EP.

The positive pop rock of “Run Away” quickly gives way to some more thunderous sounds as Turner speaks of damning the “day to day” and running into her lover’s arms, and the jangly, groove rock of “Full House” contains some pretty guitar riffs to go along with a message of not playing with a girl’s heart. One of the EP’s highlights comes next, the semi-acoustic ballad “Release Me,” where Turner talks about trying to move forward one day at a time and get over the pain of her past. The jam-ready stylings of “Ready or Not” will make you sway to the up-tempo rhythms, and the closing title track starts off as an acoustic number before gradually swelling and swelling until it sounds like a pop rock gem.

Turner turns in some decent vocal performances on these five songs. Often a quieter singer than she is overpowering, Turner ranges comfortably from high to low registers, her native accent adding a nice touch to the quality of her singing. Her lyrics often tread in the realm of relationships and struggling to figure out who you are and what you want to do, and while not exactly unique they are genuine enough to keep your attention. This is a solid effort.

"Charity Turner - Our Secrets EP (2010)"

After a stint in Broome and the realisation of her dream, Australian darling Charity Turner has released her much anticipated debut EP, Our Secrets. A beautiful collaboration with jazz pianist Dave Higgins, Our Secrets is a rock/folk gem, surely to be just the start for this gorgeous, down-to-earth girl from Sydney’s Sutherland Shire.

The opening track "Run Away", which featured on Triple J Unearthed last week at an awesome #5, is a song about escaping to that special place. Charity’s Aussie accent and breathy voice is accompanied by a guitar riff and melody that is easy to get into and pushes forth a feeling of familiarity. Higgins supports this song with his masterful fingers splaying across the piano and expert backing vocals. With its many shades of dark and light, this song definitely has the potential to be an ARIA smash hit.

"Full House" is a nice little track with heavy piano and nice drum beats. The lyrics are simple, even a little repetitive, but flow beautifully enabling the song to travel along easily. "Release Me" brings down the tempo, Charity’s breathiness complementing the feeling it evokes – just wanting to be released. "Ready Or Not" is a fun and flirty song with lyrics that are a little sexy, paired with a slight Latin feel, enhanced by the smooth guitar.

Courageously putting her heart on a platter, the EP’s title track is a magical, beautiful, soul-baring song that only one could write from experiencing what is sung. The vocals on this song are just gorgeous, with the Aussie twang making it feel 'real' and even a little charmingly nervous.

Charity’s voice is expertly raw and her strong song writing skills are evident in what could be described as an honest and enchanting recording of life, love and what lies beyond. Our Secrets is a refreshing EP with a sense of something familiar that I can’t quite put my finger on. Whatever it is though, it definitely works for me. I am really excited about what hopefully follows for this talented and ambitious singer/songwriter.

BIO:
Stepping out from behind the drum kit, singer-songwriter Charity Turner is Australia’s newest folk-rock darling, releasing her debut EP “Our Secrets” in July 2010. Teaming up with acclaimed producer Dave Higgins (Missy Higgins, Pic Withers & Brand New Heavies) 'Our secrets' featured as iTunes Australia 'Single of the Week' in August 2010. Recently returning from the caziness of L.A, Charity has teamed up with producer Andy Mak (Boy & Bear, New Empire) to record two new singles due for release mid 2012.

The youngest of five siblings born to missionary minister parents in Sydney Australia, Charity’s love for music began at an early age, penning her first song at the age of six. Under the guidance of Billy Hyde’s Drum Academy, she became a skilled drummer, regularly placing in national drum-offs.

Charity developed an open minded view of the world at a young age, spending many formative years touring remote areas of South East Asia with her missionary parents. In India there is an orphanage named after her. During her school years she also formed an all-girl band and was recording gospel music under Southern Songs (CCLI licensing).

School ended and Charity wanted a ‘seachange’ so she packed her life’s belongings (1 suitcase) and relocated to Broome, one of Australia’s most beautiful, yet remote, townships. Living was easy in the balmy tropics, and these new surroundings inspired her to begin songwriting again. With A CD case full of Ani DiFranco, Alanis, Lauren Hill and Tori Amos, Charity developed her own style of music featuring catchy melodies, heartfelt lyrics and a unique way of ‘rhythmically’ playing her guitar– influenced by all those years behind the drum kit.

At 26 years of age, Charity’s journey has brought her back to the east coast of Australia to produce her debut EP "Our Secrets". Charity is winning fans over through her rivetting, catchy and honest music that reflects life and the journey that surrounds it. A must see live performer!
