"Bishop is a talented songwriter...."

Charlie Bishop
”AMARILLO GYPSY”
©2007 Independently released
Review by Lucky Boyd

From the opening cut, it’s evident that Charlie Bishop was influenced by great Texas performers. Bishop is a talented songwriter who has used those influences a the most exquisite way. One of the attributes that is usually lacking in today’s music is a sense of independent thought. Charlie Bishop has created a unique sound for himself that is not ‘exactly like’ anyone else you’ve heard. Oh, sure, you’ll be reminded of Jerry Jeff a little and a couple of other greats will come to mind, but you will quickly be able to distinguish Bishop from the endless parade of country singers who try to imitate instead of ingratiate. As a songwriter, Bishop does it from the heart, with experience and life as his guide. The project is a great collection of Texas talent including fellow MTM members Bodie Powell (bass) and Jay Sims (producer). You’ll love “Tastes Like Chicken” and “I Don’t Ride Buses” as they put an amusing grin on your face, but one of the most entertaining cuts of the disc is “I Don’t Play George” which chronicles a situation every bar performer has experienced; being asked to play certain cover tunes. The best cut is the title cut which is well-written, expertly performed, and showcases Bishop’s innovative traditionalism.

Bio

Although known as a Luckenbach, Texas singer/songwriter, Charlie was born in Liberty, Texas, in 1958. Eventually, he found his way to Luckenbach, and Texas music has never been the same!

Charlie has loved and played music most of his life, starting with Mrs. McFadden’s piano lessons at age 6.

Inspired by Bob Wills, Waylon Jennings, Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young, Rusty Weir, Jerry Jeff Walker, Guy Clark, Rodney Crowell and many other writers who have something to say, Charlie started writing songs at the age of 14. He has written over 50 songs from 'Tastes Like Chicken' which will make anyone chuckle, to his touching ballads, and his foot stomping sing-a-longs. Charlie's deep and gravelly voice will touch your heart. Charlie tries, as he says, to paint as good of a 3 minute picture as anyone.

Charlie has played in venues from California to Alabama, from Virginia to Kansas, Mexico, and in the east coast.

Charlie's new CD, Amarillo Gypsy, is a collection of Charlie's favorite songs and appeal to the gypsy in all of us. Enjoy....
