Charlie Check'm

I was born in Milwaukee on September 9, 1979. My mother went traveling as a dancer when I was eight so she let our grandmother keep us in Birmingham, Alabama. We still went to Milwaukee every summer. I joined the Beginners band at age eight playing the saxophone. That was the beginning of a life of music. I won 2nd seat all city band at age 12. I also started singing and dancing around that age also. I joined a dance group and we used to make up dance moves and perform in talent shows. At age 13, I won 1st seat all city band. I also won lots of awards in track. My sister and I moved to Brooklyn, NY with our mother when I was 14. It was a very rough neighborhood. I started hanging with the wrong crowd but I was always the one that was discouraging them from doing bad things. If it wasn't for me, they would have went to jail a lot sooner than they did. My mother saw that I was hanging with the wrong crowd so she moved all of us to Longbeach CA. Shortly after that, the bad crowd I was hanging out with started getting killed and going to prison. I left just in time. When I moved to Longbeach CA, I was sadden by the gang violence. I wanted to do something about it. I started going to the studio and making positive rap music. People heard the demo and made fun of it. They said I was weak and soft and too preachy. I needed to find a way to send positive messages without sounding preachy. I came up with an idea. I started writing lyrics that were Rude but thought provoking. I decided to send positive messages in the form of harsh comedy. That way, they can't say it's soft or weak because it was in your face, and fearless sounding. It worked. I also continued to have meaningful messages in all of my music. People liked it so I took that style and other new styles I created and ran with them.
