"Charlotte Cardin"

We don't typically feature jazz vocalists, but there's something about Charlotte Cardin's new single that captivated me on first listen.

If you were to ask me what makes this song stand out from the genre that influences it, it's the infusion of subtle modern instrumentation: that bass drum; the border-line trap percussion that flutters in and out; and of course, Charlotte's beautiful voice.

The Quebec-based singer is currently signed to Cult Nation, the same agency that represents Iris (an artist we recently covered). She's gearing up for the release of an EP in Autumn, so keep posted for more down the line. Oh, and if you're in Montreal, you'll be able to catch her on July 4th and 5th at Jazz Festival.

"CHARLOTTE CARDIN: BIG BOY"

Well hello, Charlotte Cardin. This chick has an amazingly timeless voice. It’s got that familiar jazzy feel to it that brings to mind many a talented female crooner. At the same time her song “Big Boy” is distinctly her own. The instrumentals bring new shades to her vocal delivery. This song is kind of an instant classic. It makes perfect sense being sung by a 1940s jazz singer in a smokey basement club or by Charlotte herself at like… Coachella or something. - Kick Kick Snare

French-Canadian pop singer Charlotte Cardin is following up her jam from last summer, "Big Boy," with a new EP that will be out this May on Cult Nation. "Like It Doesn't Hurt Video Premiere"

Charlotte Cardin Almost Makes Love Look “Like It Doesn’t Hurt” In Her New Video
But maybe it does, just a little?

As a French-Canadian singer, Charlotte Cardin knows a thing or two about setting the mood when it comes to romance. Her latest single, “Like It Doesn’t Hurt,” puts her heart on the line as she and rapper Husser engage in a dialogue about a dysfunctional love that burns with eternal passion. Today, we’re premiering the official music video for the sultry track, and it’s fueled by tons of drama that eventually leads to the extreme.
Directed by Kristof Brandl, the intense visual portrays a relationship going down in flames. We start off in the midst of an arrest in a hotel parking lot, and then the camera whisks us away to more intimate scenes of the couple in different settings during happier times.

The minimalistic song will soothe you, but the visual might open some fresh wounds if you’ve ever been emotionally bruised by a lover. Cardin said that the song touches on how love can grow to be hurtful, but is also a lesson about keeping your cool even when it’s not how you really feel on the inside.

Cardin’s Big Boy EP is available now. Watch the love fade before your eyes in the video, below. - NYLON

Bio

At only 20 years old, Charlotte Cardin has already shown promise of being one of 2016’s breakout songstresses. Her debut single, the minimal electro-jazz ballad “Big Boy” garnered instant online buzz. since then, the young singer’s career has been a series of milestones. The strength of her first release was followed up with local shows in Montreal, as well as dates in New York, Paris and London. The momentum of Charlotte’s rise in popularity shows no signs of slowing down; Spotify name-checked her as one of their Spotlight Artists of 2016 at the beginning of the year. The her long-awaited debut EP was released last July and instantly jumped to number one on iTunes Canada. The success of the EP is being fueled by a 60-date Canadian tour which has so far included stops at the CBC Music festival, Osheaga, and le Festival d’été de Québec (the latter of which saw her opening up for Sting and Peter Gabriel). By road-testing her material with her tight-knit three piece band, Charlotte seems to have hit a sweet spot between the minimalism in the songs’ arrangements and the larger-than-life quality of her live show.
