"Q and A with Charlotte Carpenter"

Charlotte Carpenter is a talented young musician currently studying at the University of Derby. Holly caught up with her during her current tour to find out what influences her, her favourite gig and who she'd love to perform with.

HM: Tell us a little more about your debut EP 'A New Home'...

CC: My debut EP was released just under a year ago, recorded with my friend Tom in his bedroom. Some of the song's are quite old, written two years ago so at the time, it was an EP about growing in and out of love with people and life. I'm so glad I did it, because it has the been the start of everything which has happened so far.

HM: You're currently at the University of Derby, how are you finding studying whilst gigging around the country?

CC: I didn't know before I applied to University that music would become so serious but it has and surprisingly I've managed to hold both together and do well. I do a music degree so it kind of helps and they work well together. If anything, I've grown as a performing musician the more I've learnt and I've met some amazing friends whom my music wouldn't be the same without.

HM: What's been your favourite gig so far?

CC: Beach Break Live 2011 on the Main Stage. I played to thousands of people and the buzz was amazing. That was the point for me, when I realised I might be able to make this happen and since that moment I haven't given up!

HM: Who are you influenced by musically?

CC: Musically, I'm influenced by Laura Marling. Her music and lyrics capture me. I've followed her since I was 16 and I don't think I'll ever stop.

HM: What's the best press you've had?

CC: I've been reviewed by many art and music magazines but I always get overwelmed by the local press back home in Northamptonshire. It's really lovely to read that my hometown, friends and family are always supporting me.

HM: If you could play with any band or artist, who would it be?

CC: I would love to do a collaboration with someone like Katy B or Tinie Tempah and do a quirky acoustic song of some kind. I love the music that is coming from the UK at the moment, there's so many new sounds!

HM: Which Derby artists or bands are you most excited by at the moment?

CC: Derby has a pretty cool folky, acoustic scene and I always enjoy hearing Ryan Lauder (of Ryans Bar). I played with him over the summer in St Peters Church and the atmosphere was really special. I felt very privileged to support him!

HM: What are your plans for the near future?

CC: I'm currently on my first UK tour which finishes on the 17th September and from then on I'm recording my second EP. It's started already but this one will take a few months, I'm really excited for people to hear my new songs! It's going to be called 'Let It Go' which will be available on Itunes around Christmas time.

We can't wait to hear it! In the meantime, you can check out Charlotte's videos on YouTube or find her on Facebook. - Hatch'd Magazine

"Charlotte Carpenter, Ryans Bar"

Toe-tapping rhythms and addictive lyrics brought the perfect start to the month as seasoned performer Charlotte Carpenter brought down the house at Ryan’s Bar.

Charlotte Carpenter
Charlotte’s combination of indie/folk/pop provides her a rich and unique sound that has lead to her successes today. Alongside her Popular Music & Music Technology studies at the University of Derby, 19-year-old Charlotte has been out in the world busily making a name for herself.

She’s supported the likes of The Cribs, has represented BBC Introducing, which support promising new artists, has a slot in this year’s folk festival Barn on the Farm, and will be taking part in Super Session, where she will perform for McFly drummer Harry Judd.

It’s very rare that a performer stands out from the wealth of talented performers up and down the country, but Charlotte most certainly does. Her music induces euphoria, offering that ‘just got home’ feeling that so many bands and artists fail to produce.

Her music is positive and up-beat, even A New Home, which tells the story of a broken relationship, oozes with enthusiasm, offering an alternative approach to the worn-out sad love song genre.

Charlotte’s optimism shows in her person as well, when asked how she thought the gig went, she smiled widely and simply said: “It was good times.”

- And she was right. - This is Derbyshire

Bio

She's been tipped as the next big thing amongst female singer-songwriters. A very young and innovative musician, she has contemporary melodies laden with traditional influences"

Starting out at the tender age of 16, 5 years later Charlotte is winning acclaim everywhere she plays. After a very successful 2011 headlining the indie stage at Mayfest 2011, playing the main stage at Beach Break 2011 and performing at Barn on The Farm, Southsea Fest and Y Not Festival, Charlotte is an up and coming musician and 2012 promises to be another good year.
With Camden Barfly, Enterprise Centre and the o2 Academy, Birmingham already under her belt, as well as second UK tour and a new EP, Charlotte is getting better and better.

"She has an innate talent which move and inspire because she isn't afraid to let you inside your soul" - Jess Macdonald, Dusted Magazine.
