Biography

Charmaine Clamor is the world's leading Filipina jazz & world vocalist. Her global recognition reached new heights in 2010, when Charmaine was the only Filipina to appear on the David Byrne/Fatboy Slim concept album “Here Lies Love” (Nonesuch), about the life of Imelda Marcos. Charmaine is joined on the acclaimed recording by an all-star cast, including Cyndi Lauper, Tori Amos, Martha Wainwright, Sia, Santigold, Sharon Jones, Alison Moorer, Kate Pierson (B-52s) and Natalie Merchant. With two consecutive albums in the JazzWeek World Music Top-10, including the rare feat of simultaneously making Top-5 on both the World (#2 ranking) and Traditional Jazz (#4) radio charts, Charmaine has earned unprecedented praise for introducing audiences to Filipino languages, melodies, and instruments – and for sharing a once-in-a-generation, astonishingly expressive voice.

Lyrics

My Funny Brown Pinay

Written By: Charmaine Clamor

Take a look at my skin
It's brown.
Take a look at my nose.
It's "flat."
I'm singing for all my sisters growing up thinking they don't look right, 'cause
they ain't white, scrubbing with papaya soap
to make it light...I think you're out of sight. You are beautiful.
Maganda ka (You are beautiful).
Ikaw ay Indio (You are an Indio)
Ikaw ay Pilipino (You are Pilipino).
You're my funny brown Pinay
Sweet comic brown Pinay
You make me smile
With your heart
Yours looks they say are laughable
Unphotographable
Yet you're my favorite work of art
Is your figure less than greek
Is your mouth a little weak
When you open it to speak
Are you smart
Don't change your hair for me
Not if you care for me
Stay my funny brown Pinay
Stay
Each day we celebrate our way

In 1521 Magellan "claimed" us for the King of Spain. For 500 years we were "conquered." Tayo ay naging kanilang pag-aari ng limang daang taon. (We were conquered for 500 years). Ng limang daang taon (for 500 years).
Dito nagsimula ang ating paniniwala na kinakailangan nating maging tulad
ng mestiza at mestizo. (This started the belief that we needed to look like
mestizas and mestizos). I was once a victim of this illusion.
Naging biktima rin ako nito (I was once a victim of this illusion).
Nung ako ay maliita pa pilit kong binubura ang aking kayumangging balat
ng kung anu-anong krema o sabon. (When I was young I tried every cream
and soap to erase/lighten my brown skin).
Pango kong ilong, pinagtatawanan (They laugh at my flat nose)
Kinamumuhian (hated it).
Ngunit hindi na ngayon (But not anymore).
Ako ay kayumanggi (I am brown),
taas noo (proud)
Pilipino

Don't change your hair for me
Not if you care for me
Stay my funny brown Pinay
Stay
Each day we celebrate our way
Pinay!
