Feeling a bit camera shy

Chen Lo uses his skill as an emcee much like the West African Griot: recording the history of the people, swinging a double edged sword to entertain you and teach you. After closely studying the methods of a young Nas, Black Moon and The Roots, Chen found stage life at the age of 15. He honed his skills as a performer at small clubs in and around the Pittsburg area. He got his start as the lead emcee of live band called the Jive Family. Soon after, the producer of a group called Hi-Low Productions asked Chen to round out Hi-Lows three-man line up. Through Hi-Low Productions, Chen Lo aka 2maro gained exposure and recognition on the Pittsburgh hip-hop scene. Hi-Low Productions opened for noted artists such as: The Roots, Phife Dog, Tash (Alkoholics) and Xzibit.

Powered by the racial turmoil that he faced during his senior year at Penn State University, Chen found a renewed purpose in his music and set out to affect change. With partner Joe Blak, Chen founded the group Liberation. Liberation shared the stage with the likes of Dead Prez, Common and Erykah Badu, but found more notoriety for their potent community service. The groups focus was using their music as the soundtrack to grassroots community movements in which they were heavily involved. After learning more about the role Griot in traditional African societies, I understood my place as an emcee and began to embrace my gift on another level, said Lo. Through an organization Chen Lo co-founded, Sankofa Community Empowerment, Inc., he was able to use his music as tool of culturally relevant and socially practical education for black youth in various major cities. This is his passion.

Now with a greater maturity and a strengthened sense of purpose, Chen Lo, along with his own label, Liberation Music Group (LMG), has teamed up with Mad Maestro Entertainment and the Hopposition to produce his first solo project, The Biggest Secret. A lot of artist are unaware of the incredible power and lasting effects of this music, said Lo. We can use it to either prosper or perish. I think it will be one of the major elements in igniting a movement of oppressed people across the globe. I believe we should always create with that in mind.
