"All Girls, All Rock & Roll"

by Stephanie Elgin

There’s 12-year-old Julia Pierce on lead guitar, 12-year-old Nia Lovelis on drums, her 11-year-old sister Rena on bass, and 13-year-old Miranda Miller on rhythm guitar. Together they make up the members of the rock and roll tween band-Cherri Bomb, and you may have even seen their performance at this year’s Rockin’ Summer Nights concert series at the Westfield Valencia Town Center. Amongst many participants, the band was selected to perform and take stage to entertain our community with their high-energy rock and roll tunes.
After a search for talented girl musicians in the Los Angeles area, Cherri Bomb was formed officially in August of 2008. One thing is certain- their stage presence is electrifying. The pre-teens captivate audiences and create magic with their fun personalities and powerful vocals.
Santa Clarita resident, Julia, lead guitar, vocals and harmonica, began training and performing live at the young age of four. She began piano lessons just a year later and got her first guitar at age six. Originally from New Jersey, Julia relocated to Los Angeles for musical career opportunities. She has performed at local events, gaining recognition at a young age. She was recently signed as an Artist Endorsement for Daisy Rock Girl Guitars. “Music,” states Julia, “is the best thing life can give you, and Cherri Bomb will definitely show that message through our rock music!”
Nia, on drums and vocals, was originally from New York City. At age seven, she moved to the Los Angeles area where she became a children’s model for companies such as Ralph Lauren, Target, and H&M to name a few. At age eight, she pursued her passion, which was to be a drummer in a rock band. Nia’s talent behind the drums has also gained her an endorsement by RCI Drums International. In her spare time, the young drummer likes to read and write stories. Nia adds, “I also spend a lot of time with my animals!”
Nia’s sister, and youngest member of the band, Rena plays bass and vocals. Rena signed with L.A. Models and L.A. Talent and has been seen on ad campaigns and commercials. She also appeared in the Audi commercial, “Summer of Fun” and played Little Lily in A Gothic Tale. She was inspired to play bass after watching a video performance of Tony Levin with Peter Gabriel. In her spare time, Rena also likes to read. “I exercise and watch movies. Horror movies are my favorite!”
Miranda, the oldest member, has multiple roles by playing rhythm guitar, all keyboards and vocals. She has been performing since the age of 3 and began piano lessons at age four, guitar lessons at seven, and voice lessons at eight. She has played key roles in musicals like Annie Warbucks, Bye Bye Birdie and Gypsy, to name a few. “For all of our fans and supporters we can’t thank you enough,” states Miranda.
This all girl, all tween rock and roll band blends the influences of classic rock bands such as Led Zeppelin, Kansas and Aerosmith with the modern sounds of today’s bands such as Paramore, Green Day and Muse. Vocally, their style is much like Queen, The Beatles and singer Alanis Morissette. Some of their performances include The Roxy Theater in Hollywood, The Guitar Merchant in Canoga Park and the Fourth of July fireworks extravaganza in Woodland Hills. Cherri Bomb was recently awarded by the City of Los Angeles, a “Certificate of Recognition” for their commitment and extraordinary contributions to the community. Rock on, Cherri Bomb!

Bio

Cherri Bomb was formed as the result of a tedious search for the most talented girl rock musicians in the Los Angeles area. Not an easy task with the abundance of sugary pop stars and cookie cutter tween groups on the market.

The avarage age of these four girls is 12 years old and they are learning how to rock the old school way, with hours and hours of practice. With the intense lessons of timing, dynamics, rhythm and harmony being learned, their sound and playing is evolving and developing on par with bands twice their age. They can captivate audiences as they did while opening at the Roxy for "Chelsea Girls" or playing a 4th of July extravaganza for 30,000 people. They were born to be on-stage, born to rock. Not your average kid band. Raw guitars, tasteful solos, powerful drums, tight rhythm section, sweet harmonies, multi-instrumental. These girls seem like they have it all and are working hard in becoming "Rock's new generation".
