Bio

name: Vickus Horne
born: 29 April 1983
raised: Pietermaritzburg-kzn
instrument: guitar, lead vocals

For a guy who can now be found humming, strumming, bobbing, or tapping at almost all times of the day, Vickus’s connection to music was muted for many years by a different passion for performance: acting. He first picked up a guitar at age 19 just before commencing his theatre studies at Tshwane University of Technology in Pretoria, South Africa. Once he was infected with music, though, there was no prospect for recovery.
Vickus continues to act with a professional agency in Cape Town but focuses on deepening his knowledge of music, from studying guitar part-time with jazz guru Alvin Dyers, to constantly indulging in the many live sounds and vibes the Western Cape has to offer. Vickus is also the music director and youth leader at Corpus Christi Church. His biggest musical influences are the Dave Matthews Band, John Mayer, the John Butler Trio, and Counting Crows; all jazzy, jiving, and straight from the heart, Vickus’s biggest goal as a musician is to produce music as authentic and soulful as that of his idols.
Both in music and in life, this fun-loving, energetic guitarist/vocalist hopes to grow in every direction but up.

name: Marchant van Wyk
born: 3 November 1983
raised: Cape Town, South Africa
instrument: base guitar

A thoroughbred Capetonian, this health-guru band member must be eating something right to be able to play the bass guitar like he does. Marchant studied at the University of Stellenbosch where he received a Bachelor’s degree in Sports Science. He continues to work in the health field today mainly as an aerobics and fitness trainer, and also a part-time masseuse.
Though he began his relationship with music on the acoustic guitar at age 16, the now 25-year-old rocks the base guitar as if he knows nothing else—smooth, skillfully and undeniably charged with passion. His interest in music extends vastly beyond his own band’s tunes, however, as Marchant harbors a mindful of music knowledge. With a deep interest in and awareness of music (especially South African music), the bassist keeps an open mind and open ears to all sounds young and old, far and near.

Jason Mark Soloman
Jason Mark Solomon or otherwise known as just plainly “jay” is sometimes called “happy feet” by his friends. You will always find him playing air drums and shuffling his feet to the beat of a tune and you will never see him sitting still if there is music around. At the age of 20 he is the youngest member of the band, Cherry Vynil. Although he is currently working, he would love to study music. He was born in Kempton Park near Johannesburg in 1990, but since then he moved to Cape Town in 1999 and has been staying here ever since.
Although he has been playing drums for only 3 years, he also experimented with other instruments such as bass guitar, electric and acoustic guitar. But his heart belongs to his favorite and most enjoyable instrument, his drums. Jason has a natural feel for playing drums compared to other instruments which he can also play. The first time he attempted to play the drums was in 2007 at a friend’s house. Amazingly he could already play solid rock beats and was even jamming along to tunes on his friend’s stereo. This experience inspired him so much that playing drums became his everything. He is thankful and blessed to have such a gifted ear for rhythm and music. Shortly after his dad bought him his first drum kit, Jason was also playing for a crazy metal band for 2 years. Unfortunately things did not work out for him because metal was not really what he wanted to play, but he gained a lot of experience. Jason was brought up listening to classic rock, county, folk rock and alternative rock and inevitably that is what he loves the most. He can perform comfortably in a lot of music genres but rap or RnB is not his scene. Jason met Vickus Horne the day he joined the church band late last year. He also has a passion for Christian music. Jason would like to give God all the glory for He is the one who gave him the talent to do what he loves best. Jason was fortunate to have met Vickus who saw his potential and passion for music, so he asked Jason if he would consider joining Cherry Vynil. Jason took up the offer although his style of playing was totally different. He thought that it would be a great opportunity and challenge for him to learn and feel a different style of playing and even enjoy it.
According to Jason this is the best opportunity that ever came his way, because he really feels at home with the other members of the band. After performing at the Aardklop festival in Potchefstroom in September 2010, he knew this is where his heart wants to stay. Jason is also grateful to the Lord for placing him in a band where his style of performance will be able to grow and develop into something different, unique and extrao
