They've never been confused with the quarterback stud or the homecoming queen. As adults they still don't seem to understand--or care--what "cool" is. So Chess Club just seemed the appropriate name for their band.
The band was originally started as a whim between two friends. After seeing yet another band that clearly had little or no knowledge of their instruments or the craft of song-writing, the friends shouted, "We can do better than that!" Shortly after they started writing music together, however, they began to realize that they had something. Not knowing truly what it was they actually "had" they enlisted the help of a couple of friends. That's when things got really interesting.
Chess Club has now evolved into a four-member pop-noir phenomenon. It is a band that is certainly greater than the sum of its parts. Each member has spent considerable time on their respective instruments, an effort that is not lost in the music. Chess Club believes that music should not be aural wallpaper. They believe that there is a place for art in pop music. Chess Club does not want to be the hometown hero. Chess Club wants to dominate the airwaves and make people listen to music for a change.
