Chew Lips formed in London in the summer of 2008 and soon set about establishing themselves as one of the most exciting new bands in the capital. Armed with a sleuth of electro-pop hooks and, in the whirlwind charisma of Tigs, a singer impossible to take your eyes off, the trio soon grabbed the attention of uber-cool French label Kitsune, who felt compelled to release the band’s debut single. ‘Solo’ was released in early 2009, causing a storm in the blogosphere and beyond. Pitchfork called it “classic, pristine”, whilst The Fly magazine opined it was destined to be “one of the most magnificent debuts of the year”.
A relentless schedule of touring followed as Chew Lips honed their sound into a sleek, sophisticated beast. A second sell-out single on Kitsune, ‘Salt Air’, followed – NME called it “an addictive slice of heart-wrenching disco-pop” - before the band begun work in summer ‘09 on their full-length debut with Bat For Lashes collaborator David Kosten. The fruits of their labour came with the self-released album ‘Unicorn’ in January 2010, such a giant leap forward for their sound that they were confident enough to leave off both of the previous singles. It was easy to see why – in the likes of ‘Play Together’, ‘Karen’ and ‘Slick’, they’d outdone themselves. The press agreed: the BBC called it “startling”, NME “mesmeric”, whilst a 4/5 review in The Guardian said it “drags you straight in.”
Another stretch of intense touring followed and, by the time the European festival season came round and after a scene-stealing appearance at SXSW in Texas (Elle US described them as the best new act at the festival), Chew Lips were on top of their game. Duly topping off the tour with a headline appearance on the BBC Introducing stage at Glastonbury, they immediately began work on the follow-up to ‘Unicorn’.
After spending a year writing and with over 50 songs to choose from, the band headed into the studio with producer Ant Whiting (MIA, Animal Collective, Pixie Lott, Jagga) and are currently putting the finishing touches to album 2. With a line up change, the addition of a live drummer and an arsenal of exhilarating news songs, 2012 promises bright things for Chew Lips.
