Why Chick Quest flew under my radar for this long is beyond me. With their debut album released just this year, they’re new. By combining post-punk and classic western film sounds, they’re sick. Writing a review of the band’s debut album Vs. Galore was really hard. I kept finding myself hitting the laptop keys with one finger, not so much typing words as keeping beat with the tracks. And that was only when I could actually stop myself from flailing my arms with abandon while bouncing my head and tapping my feet to the wicked bass lines and snappy percussion. The initial concept behind Chick Quest was to combine chord progressions from old 60’s Italian Western film scores, such as work by Ennio Morricone, with the dancey Post-Punk of the late 70’s and early 80’s like Talking Heads, B52's, Manicured Noise or The Clash. The band name itself is a nod to cheesy 60's B-film titles and is meant to be taken as "A girl on a quest" as opposed to "Guys on a quest for chicks".
Although the singer is an American expat from Athens, Georgia, the band is based in Vienna, Austria, as the three other members are Austrian. In 2015, the band released their debut album to glowing reviews and were featured on such sites as Pitchfork, KEXP, CMJ, and named one of the best bands of 2015 by Der Standard. Not resting on this success, the band recorded a follow up album in 2016 and are currently shopping it around to labels for a planned release in early 2017.
