"China Syndrome CD review"

Apart from having a cool name, China Syndrome has taken a difficult way to go -- power pop. The debut album is a grower with the Kinks-like "Here Comes That Monday Feeling" followed by the astutely chosen cover of Pale Fountains' "Jean's Not Happening." Nice combo.

"Song of the weekend 7/15"

I spent some time perusing bands outside of the Seattle area this weekend, and I came across a band from East Vancouver (Canada, that is) called China Syndrome, and they provided me with my "song of the weekend" in a little ditty called "Here Comes That Monday Feeling." With vocals vaguely reminiscent of Andy Partridge and a classic powerpop guitar bounce, this is the perfect Monday song to kickoff your work week.

Bio

China Syndrome is pleased to keep the power pop fire burning bright with the release of our DEBUT, SELF-TITLED CD. Our music is a fine blend of the driving pop hooks of The New Pornographers and Fountains of Wayne, with liberal dollops of old favourites such as the Replacements, XTC and the Small Faces. Our album was recorded at JC/DC Studio in Vancouver under the keen production eyes and ears of David Carswell, with help from The New Pornographers’ John Collins, the team responsible for great recent discs by The New Pornographers, Destroyer, Immaculate Machine, Tegan and Sara, The Winks, among many others.

CHINA SYNDROME is vocalist and guitarist Tim Chan, guitarist Vern Beamish, bassist Gord Berry and Scott Watts on drums. We've been involved in a number of other Vancouver and Victoria bands including 64 Funnycars, She Was the Law, Lumpy, The Dry Coughs, Magic Ass and The Critics. We’ve been steadily building a following over the past year, playing in various Vancouver venues including the Lamplighter, the Backstage Lounge, Piccadilly Pub, the Marine Club (R.I.P.) and the Princeton Pub.

The CHINA SYNDROME CD features twelve songs, eleven of them written or co-written by Tim, the twelfth being a rockin' cover of The Pale Fountains' "Jean's Not Happening." We will be actively promoting CHINA SYNDROME throughout 2007; our next show is on March 23 at Pat's Pub, 403 East Hastings St. in Vancouver.
