Chinese Fingertrap

 Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA
BandR&BFunk

Chinese Fingertrap blends elements of jazz, funk and rock and ranges from hard jams to haunting grooves. Their songs are highly distinguishable from one to the next, taking the listener through a myriad of moods.

Biography

Formed in November of 2005, Chinese Fingertrap has quickly emerged onto the midwest and national music scene. Their unique instrumentation compound with amazing musical enthusiasm to create a fresh, organic sound that appeals to all audiences. This five-piece ensemble is held together by the snapping rhythm section of Cody Schleichert on drums and Brian Saulig on bass. When the unique percussive keyboard playing of Eric Frank and the smooth saxophone licks of Nathan Kamsler are added, this band is about as good as it gets.

Completing the lineup is Chinese Fingertrap's newest member, vocalist Alyssa Voelker. Alyssa was gifted with an amazing voice that combines the power of Aretha Franklin and Bonnie Raitt with the beauty and elasticity of Norah Jones.

CFT's summer of 2007 entailed many world-class festival appearances such as 10,000 Lakes (Detroit Lakes, MN), Wakarusa (Lawrence, KS), and Forecastle Fest (Louisville, KY) in which they shared the bill with an eclectic array of stellar artists. Some of these acts included: Galactic, Medeski, Martin, and Wood, Ben Harper, Widespread Panic, Les Claypool, Bob Weir, Umphrey's McGee, Derek Trucks, Zappa Plays Zappa and many more. Now a full-time touring act, Chinese Fingertrap's progress has been rapidly accelerating. A spring 2008 release is expected for their debut album being produced by Dave Adler (Willy Porter Band).

All you preachers
can hold your breath
and all your worries
done put to rest
I've been thinking
I've got it down
Build us a new on
and we'll wash out this town

Let's start moving
Let's start moving
Let's start moving
Get things improving baby

All your troubles
will leave and you'll be fine
and all your problems
send them on down the line
I've been thinking
I've got it down
Build us a new one
and we'll wash out this town

Let's start moving
Let's start moving
Let's start moving
Get things improving baby

Get off your soap box
it's about time to act
get your hands dirty
let's take our future back
I've been thinking
I've got it down
Build us a new one
and we'll wash out this town

Let's start moving
Let's start moving
Let's start moving
Get things improving baby

Gossamer Sky

I was wondering
have you ever seen a waterfall
falling off the earth and miss the ground...
and fall for days?
Did you look beyond
the edge and think that you might see a pond?
Then you blinked and all the stars turned on
and the music played

Well isn't this nice
this sweet paradise
the weather's been sound
and people are all out on the town
Well isn't this sweet
'cause February was blue
tip over the moon and you can just jump right through

Shimmer down to the sweetest sound you know
and that's where you'll go, go, go

It couldn't be chance
folks call life a dance
a sweet little tune
that keeps people floating round the blooms
Well isn't this serene
to dance through this dream
A cool subtle breeze
reminds us to keep our minds at ease

Shimmer down to the sweetest sound you know
and that's where you'll go, go, go

My, my, my, my days have been fine
but my knights on the line

The night owl lurks
and the night owl flies
He's unveiling my disguise
Flies over head
with the moon in his eyes
An orb that keeps us mesmerized
Gracefully he flies away
and we're left wishing for the day
Gracefully he flies away
and we're left wishing for the day

When morning breaks
we feel our mistakes
kept pushing for more
until we forgot what living's for
But I can still smile
even though I can't fly
I'm walking on high
daydreaming the dust out of my eyes

Shimmer down to the sweetest sound you know
and that's where you'll go, go, go

I was wondering
have you ever seen a waterfall?

Small Town

Written By: Alyssa Voelker

Poor old Ronnie was crying
as hard as he could cry
not a soul could hear him
besides the rats that listened near by
Now he's growing old and he's waiting
for freedom from his cell
He wonders how he even got here
alone in this cold gray hell

15 years they told him
before he'd be set free
"I'm an innocent man he screamed"
but they would not hear his plea
A pure heart was tainted
so they'd have someone to blame
but darkness takes the mind over
and now he'll never be the same

We've all been told
the news doesn't lie
but we forget within the blink of an eye
And the next big thing
goes flying by
we just shake our heads as we look to the sky

A quiet man lived down the street
he'd only come out at night
When he came out he was not alright
couldn't even stand on his own damn two feet
Rumor has it he liked this girl
who lived about a block away
Except another man, he had took her hand
and the quiet man had something to say

In the middle of the night
two shots were fired
two innocent lives were retired
A shot once more
and the quiet man fell to the floor

The dogs would howl and the peoplethey'd throw their hands up and shout
they'd all gather round to see what this was all about
Mary called up John and she woke him from his bed
to announce that three towns people were lying cold and dead

People talked and spread the word around
the world didn't care that something went down
the world didn't care that something went down
no the world didn't care that something went down
except for the people in this small town

Got Bone?

Written By: Eric Frank

Shaken from a dream as I pull up my sheets
Came a full-toned, resonant, and sonorous beat
Which diluted Mark the chimera and tickled my feet
When I opened my eyes, be -ed I would greet

Lower than a baritone and fresher than a Royce
Not serenidae, not in 'zona, not a sunfish or a voice
But a loud-mouth bass profound by choice
In the flesh, in a nutshell, he's Fingertrap's boy

Lock yourself up six hours a day
When you instigate the funk you can't drive it away
Shotgun on a scale from large to small
Clever on a crescent you've got it all
Five fingers, five steps, five strings - bad news
For the feeble, inept and those refused
It took a long time but I finally found you
God! you make the groove....

Feelin' rather satisfied I started my day
When all throughout my head a beat laid back and it played
And it kept my step in sync and then I stop and I say
I wonder what's behind the things that make me think this way....?

Dancing in the Night

Written By: Alyssa Voelker

This old cat told me once

A dream ain't worth nothing but

I called him back on that

Said how'd you get to where you're at

He said that he's been working since the day that he was born

Stays late in the evening, gets up early in the morn

And I said, that sounds just fine sir

But put your argument to rest

That's not the route I want to

Take on this quest

Cause when I hear this sweet, sweet music play

How could I want to go and work all my days

Cause this music gets me moving and my feet get light

I slip on my shoes and go on dancing in the night

La-de-da-de-da-de dig down

La-de-da-de dig down

La-de-da-de dig down

La-de-da-de-da-de dig down

La-de-da-de dig down

La-de-da-de dig down

Feel the low kick, rim click drive

Soul steady walk the bass down jive

Hips sway and the grooves begin

Sound swells and it draws me in

That's about the time that I feel everything take flight

No hiding of emotion under lights so bright

And I say, now hear this sound sir

My argument at its best

Let your guard down sir

And might I suggest

That when you hear this sweet, sweet music play

Evacuate tomorrow, start living for today

Cause this music gets me moving and my feet get light

I just let loose and go on dancing in the night

La-de-da-de-da-de dig down

La-de-da-de dig down

La-de-da-de dig down

La-de-da-de-da-de dig down

La-de-da-de dig down

La-de-da-de dig down

Gonna show you how to dig down

Show you how to dig down

Show you how to dig down

Gonna show you how to dig down

Down, down down down down down

Cause when I hear this sweet, sweet music play

How could I want to go and work all my days

Cause this music gets me moving and my feet get light

I slip on my shoes and go on dancing in the night

Jailbreak Blues

Written By: Alyssa Voelker

Monday is coming and I'll be leaving town
Keep your head up so that you don't lose your crown
You know these stakes are rising
That means that I can't stick around

Made a bad move, baby
They're high up on my trail
Any longer and they'll throw my ass in jail
It was fun while it lasted, I'll send a thank you in the mail

Got the jailbreak blues
I got to stay on the move
and I ain't got no time for you

Pack my bags and I'll be on my way
The law is calling and they want me to pay
I tried my sweet-talking
but they don't care what I got to say

Got the jailbreak blues
I got to stay on the move
and I ain't got no time for you

This train is leaving and I hope it's moving fast
I would stay if I wasn't running from my past
The sirens should have warned you
You know these things don't last

Got the jailbreak blues
I got to stay on the move
and I ain't got no time for you

Ain't got no time for you....
