"Chris Cawthray Trio Recap"

A lucky few patrons of The Spill had a unique opportunity to witness the improvisational prowess of a hell of a good band on Saturday afternoon. Peterborough isn't yet a jazz town, but if more people knew what they missed over the weekend, it just might turn out to be. (Did that make sense?). Over the course of about an hour, Chris Cawthray (d), Glen Hall (sax) and Simeon Abbott (keys) ran through a set that encompassed a Cawthray original, Steely Dan, Bob Dylan, Sonny Rollins, Beck, Rob Price and Wilco (I think Abbott's warm keys and Hall's inside --> out solo made their version of "Jesus, Etc." even more enjoyable than the Yankee Hotel Foxtrot original).

Full set list:

Hope Song (Chris Cawthray)
Mouse Game (Rob Price)
Showbiz Kids (Becker/Fagen)
Blessing in Disguise (Sonny Rollins)
Ballad of Hollis Brown (Dylan)
Paper Tiger (Beck)
Jesus, etc. (Wilco)
Untitled improvisation (Chris Cawthray Trio)

"Recently Seen"

Chris Cawthray is a Toronto musician you have likely never heard who passed through Kaffe 1870 not long ago. Not many people caught his performance, which is unfortunate because he has some interesting ideas and a unique sound. He was in town to debut his latest project – a duo with Simeon Abbott – as well as to play an opening set with Ottawa’s Ashley Newall and Montreal’s Neil Gerster. Cawthray’s new album “Improvised Roots” features Abbott on the organ and Cawthray on drums, a combination that he insists is not as unusual as one might think. Unusual or not, the duo certainly produces an innovative sound based around extensive improvisation over top of familiar rhythms. Whether playing an original work or an interpretation of a Dylan or a Wilco tune, Cawthray’s unique take on a song is worth a listen. - Wakefield Notes/John Morrow (Wakefield, PQ CANADA)

Bio

Adventurous, outrageous and contagious surf-inspired roots/jazz/rock.

A power trio with the hands of a surgeon and the feet of a dancer.

Formed in 2004, the Chris Cawthray Trio (CC3) is out on the road on their way to their 1000th gig. The lineup surrounding Chris Cawthray on drums has changed over the years but the spirit has never wavered; real music that moves the players and the listeners. Groove over grandstanding, funk over fashion.
Some might call the loose, improvisational style "jazz" but the elements add up to so much more than that. Surf guitar, funky drums, exotica harmonies and inspired covers of Wilco, Bjork, Dylan, Milton Nascimento and more combine with Chris Cawthray's original songs to deliver an engaging mix of music for your head, heart and feet. The trio has toured in Canada and the Eastern USA and has no plans of stopping: clubs, theatres, galleries, festivals, house concerts, dive bars, tiki shacks, they hit them all.
The current CC3 features Chris Cawthray on drums, keys and vocals, New York City guitarist Rob Price (previously of Dim Sum Clip Job, and a solo performer in his own right) and San Francisco/NYC jetsetter Lucio Menegon (The Bodice Rippers, Reverend Screaming Fingers) on bass. Their new EP of original music, “the known world” will be released digitally on Cawthray's label, Coagulated International in February 2011, with touring to follow.
