"Audience’s good vibes"

Chris James, Monkey Tree House, Wigton Chris James was a splendid start to the new year of Monkey Tree House concerts, demonstrating some amazing classic slide guitar tunes and vocals.
Chris got the audience involved and this always adds to the pleasure of the evening. Things could have been marred when the sound system went on ‘a wobbly’, but the good mood transcended this blip.
Come on in the Kitchen, with slide and great sounds of the wind and a train, came to life with 12-bar blues, as did the claw hammer picking in My Darling Babe, My Creole Girl and Walk On’s funky and strong heavy metal. Red Hair and Black Leather – what a combination: this proved a sweet, sad ballad. Great stuff. The evening ended with an old, one might even say an ancient, favourite: Good Night Irene, brought back to life in a super arrangement.

"Review of Trick of the Light CD"

“…whether picking as tidily as can be or turning in quicksilver slide guitar to perfection, here’s someone who has mastered the craft of making “the blues” very listenable…”.Loudon Temple, Maverick Magazine. - Maverick magazine

"Penrith plug and Play"

“Chris delivered an evening of authentic, raw, acoustic instrumentals and songs. With his warm, charismatic personality and laid back manner, Chris made it all look so easy as he swung into action with a ragtime tune…. He is able to draw out an authentic Mississippi Delta sound and has the voice to match…”.Review, Penrith ‘Plug and Play’. - Penrith Herald

Bio

I am a solo acoustic guitarist, playing slide and fingerpicking blues and original songs. I have played at major Folk festivals such as Fylde, Warwick, North Devon and Stroud Blues festival. Along the way I have also played support to many of the major Blues performers around such as John Mayall, Dr. Feelgood, Nine Below Zero, Nimmo Brothers and acoustic acts such as Boo Hewardine, Paul Jones, Sarah-Lee Guthrie, Maddy Prior, Kristina Olsen, the list goes on.

I am regularly booked in Cumbria for the Brampton Live Festival, the Carlisle Folk and Blues Club, Penrith Plug and Play and for South Lakes Music Promotions.
I am now becoming a regular performer further afield.

I am now actively seeking gigs throughout the country to promote 'Trick of the Light' a mainly Blues-based acoustic album produced by John Wood. John, (who has produced albums by Richard Thompson and John Martyn) brings to the fore the quality and energy of Chris’ guitar playing - particularly the slide guitar as evidenced on 'Irene Goodnight'.

To give a flavour of a Chris James gig, here’s part of a review from Penrith Plug and Play: 'Drawing inspiration from the great bluesmen of the past such as Robert Johnston, Reverend Gary Davis and Big Bill Broonzy, Chris delivered an evening of authentic, raw, acoustic instrumentals and songs. With his warm, charismatic personality and laid back manner, Chris made it all look so easy as he swung into action with a ragtime tune, All Of My Six Reasons, followed by a great rendition of Come On In My Kitchen on slide guitar. He growled his way through standards like Stackerlee, Cocaine Blues, Hesitation Blues and Just Can’t Be Satisfied and went into more mellow mode with Creole Belle and All Just Talk. Chris James is at his very best when he involves the audience and they had no hesitation in belting out the choruses to Jesus On The Mainline and Old Time Religion. He is able to draw out an authentic Mississippi Delta sound and has the voice to match…'
