It may have taken 25 years, but Billy Bragg at last has a rival for the title of the Bard of Barking.
Chris Jones, born in Barking but now a resident of Barkingside, has certainly inherited Billy's knack for writing witty and uplifting pop nuggets, although without, perhaps, the political awareness.
He describes his music as "snapshots of an existence caught between the rush of inner-city London and surburbia - a conflict reflected in the frustrated-yet-aspirational lyrics and its mixed bag of influences".
Chris' recorded music, all self played and self produced, is an eclectic affair, reining in the twisted Arcadian romanticism of teh Libertines in tracks like Bow Belle, a hint of Jamie T and the Arctic Monkeys' social commentary on B-Side The Point, and even elements of Radiohead-like electronica in Consider it Confronted.
But live, his solo acoustic shows are a lyrical tour-de-force, stripping the songs down to their bare bones to reveal a rarely heard intensity, only usually matched by the aforemented Braggster and Jamie T. - Ilford Recorder
