He's not really country, or folk, or blues, or rock, or roots, but he's all of them as well...it's music played with passion, drive and energy, amazing guitar skills, great songwriting, and a voice that can only come from the land of Australia...did we mention he's one of the best live acts around?

Biography

Originally hailing from wheat, sheep and cattle farms in the south west of WA, independent musician Chris Matthews first appeared on the Perth music scene back in 1999 as a 17 year old instrumental guitarist. Since then, through a process of sheer hard work, drive and love of music, Chris has developed into one of Australia’s finest and well respected singer/songwriter/guitarists.

Taking a pinch of blues, a decent sprinkling of country, generous proportions of good foot stompin' rock and roll and topping it all off with sheer brute force and passion, Chris' live shows have become legendary for their astonishing guitar work, combined with intelligent songwriting and entertaining off the cuff stage banter. His remarkable skills on 6 and 12 string guitars, banjo and lap steel have amazed audiences from Broome to Batemans Bay. Armed with the afore mentioned instruments, a home made stomp box to drive the beat home and an impassioned and solid voice that could only come from the land of Australia, he is one of those performers who once seen, is one you never forget.

As a general rule, Chris plays over 250 shows each year in every distant corner of the land. Late nights, 5 hour gigs, much broken gear and countless hours and kilometres on the road have formed Matthews into a formidable force, holding his own anywhere from a massive festival stage, to the humble old campfire, to the local pub raging on a Friday night. Watch out if you feel like heckling, because in his own words Chris says “I’ve heard it all before, and believe me I’ve learnt to give it back in spades. All those front bar gigs in regional Australia give you a pretty thick skin, and you learn in a real hurry that you can’t be precious about yourself”.
And while the country song “I’ve Been Everywhere” may not be the best song ever written, it could almost read like a history of Chris’ touring schedule. Name a few towns when you next run into him, and he will probably start reminiscing about some memorable times and shows he has had in all of them.

2011 was a busy one for Mr Matthews. He started the year as a finalist in the prestigious Star Maker competition at the Tamworth Country Music Festival in January, recorded and released his debut album “It Goes To Eleven" in a hectic 2 months afterwards, wrapped up his 9th tour of Western Australia and the Northern Territory (30 shows in 32 days and 15,000kms anyone?), and played various other shows in all states and territories of the country at one time or a another.

Supporting artists from such differing styles as John Farnham, Adam Harvey, the Celibate Rifles, and Liz Stringer, the Dave Mann Collective and Blue Shaddy, to sharing the stage with Jimmy Barnes, James Blundell and the Hoodoo Gurus at iconic events such as the Kimberley Moon Experience (at which in 2009 he was also the MC), attests to the fact that Chris’ music can find a home anywhere it goes. Since relocating to the East Kimberley region of Western Australia in 2006, he has also been the resident musician at world renowned resort El Questro, with many a listener being heard to have remarked, “I have never, ever in my life seen anyone play the guitar like that......”.

4 EP’s, 1 LP, 1 Live LP and 4500 shows later (probably) Chris is not slowing down at time soon. With a massive run of shows at the 2012 Tamworth Music Festival to start the year, a new album in the works, and touring and festival shows aplenty, the train just keeps on rolling along for one of Australia’s hardest working and finest talents.

Lyrics

Bury Me Deep

Written By: Chris Matthews

The hair stood up on the back of my neck
As you reflected the early morning light
Been so long since i was blown away like that
I couldnt let it get away without a fight

CHORUS
But you could bury me deep beneath the soul of this land
Beneath the black soil flood plain
Spirit me away to never see another day
Any you wouldnt hear me complain

And now we're driving through the dust
On theway to the station
Like a wild dog finding his way home
Wanting to scream out but i knew that i couldnt
It was something only you and me could know

CHORUS

And now this place is calling to you from afar
As leaves fall like rain from the trees
And all that i have is this feeling and memory
But thats more than enough to comfort me

CHORUS

Rumours Goin' Round

Written By: Chris Matthews

3am on wednesday morning
Locked and loaded and ready to go
Strange things can happen when you least expect them
Specially those things you should know

CHORUS
But now there's a rumour goin' round
And its spreading like a sickness through this town
Im a man of my word, i didnt utter a sound
But there's still all these rumours goin' round

And now its thursday evening and the thrill has gone
But outside the glow of the dashboard light
The fire still keeps burning on
And while im driving, you'll be flying across the sky tonight
To Darwin via a Kimberley town
But not quite disappearing from sight

CHORUS

CHORUS

Fools and Newcomers

Written By: Chris Matthews

Well, its that time of year again
The dragonflies are back around
Fifth wheels and campervans come rolling into town
And the wooden doors are swinging fast down at the distillery
No room left to park for the locals in the street

CHORUS
And some of the questions they ask sound quite bizarre
"How long to the nearest town? It cant be that far!"
And "its so hot and sticky surely it will rain today?"
Thats what fools and newcomers say

Well, we're stuck in the middle of nowhere
Moving at a slower pace
Things might be expensive but we're such a tiny place
And why is there a frown showing on your well worn dial?
When you're living out your golden years,
You can afford to hurry up and wait a while

CHORUS

And the roads are dry and dusty with the cattle running free
But everyone's still driving fast to somewhere else they'd rather be
And wayside bays are loaded full with no place left to go
With people who have left their home to get away from it all

CHORUS

North For The Summer

Written By: Chris Matthews

CHORUS
Well if you go north for the summer
I can tell you now you better take care
Cause the heat can kill you and the bugs will sting you
There'll be sweat pouring from everywhere
Well if you go north for the summer
To a land more ancient than old
The thunder be rolling, the lightning be crashing
Right into your soul

Have you seen the storms rolling down over Grasscastle Plain?
Or the Victoria River when its broken its banks after 5 inches of rain?
And there's water flowing over Blackrock, and the side of the Cockburn Range
And that northern road to Kalumburu is closed, who knows when it will open again?

CHORUS

And the highway is usually closed down at Big Mabel Creek
But they tell me they built a new bridge there, only finished last week
But the truckies all down at the local still tell me that they wont run on time
Cause old Bedford Downs copped a flogging last night
And that Fitzroy's rising over that bridge one more time.

CHORUS
