"The passion clearly comes through on stage. It's obvious that these guys love playing music together, they feed off each other's energetic vibe just as feverishly as they do the crowd's. McCarty is an intriguing performer and a paradox in motion. While playfully grooving about the stage like an excited kid, an intensely soulful voice resonates from a body that would make any athlete jealous..."

"Chris McCarty gets chance at big time"

Gainesville's Chris McCarty Band had a good excuse for missing the Dave Matthews Band's recent show at the O'Connell Center - singer and band were preparing to open shows for Dave in both Tampa and West Palm Beach.

And the same folks who got McCarty those gigs - Matthews' management folks - are now looking into the possibility of working further with the longtime local pop-rock group.

But wait - it gets better than that for the hometown heroes, who return to Gainesville's Common Grounds on Friday for a well-earned homecoming show.

At the Matthews show at the Ford Amphitheatre in Tampa, where McCarty and band performed on a side stage to open the night, veteran Hollywood producer Eric Valentine heard the group and was so impressed that he put the band up in a mansion for the West Palm Beach shows and flew his partner in from L.A. to hear the band as well.

In short, Valentine - who's produced albums for everybody from Maroon 5, Third Eye Blind and Good Charlotte to and the new "Transformers" movie soundtrack - says that he will produce an album for the group. And that's regardless of whether McCarty signs a deal with Valentine's own label or a contract with another major label.

"I'm going to take him out to L.A. for a couple of weeks and do some demos and start working with him," Valentine said Monday from Los Angeles. "And I'm very particular about the artists that I choose to deal with. As a matter of fact, Chris is probably the first non-signed person or group that I will be working with in years."

So what is it about Gainesville's own pop-rockers extraordinaire that caught the producer's eye and ear? It boiled down to that live performance at the Ford Amphitheatre's side stage, which Valentine dubbed as "incredible."

"I was so impressed," says the producer, who singled out McCarty's soulful style, lyrics and vocal range.

"His showmanship, his band, his skills; he's a seasoned performer," Valentine says. "I can tell he's been doing this a long time and I'm very surprised that he isn't with a major label right now."

McCarty, who's previously released two EPs and a full-length CD, and has opened shows for acts ranging from Blues Traveler to James Brown, is understandably energized about his group's current prospects.

"By January, I should have an idea about which direction I'm going to go," McCarty says.

In Los Angeles, Valentine says he hopes that Chris' way will include his way.

"I will be working with him, most definitely," the producer says. "Whether he signs to my label or someone else, I really look forward to working with that guy."
