Lydia Patritto
Lydia Patritto
(Music Review)
"I just came for coffee," Lydia Patritto belted out for an opening song at her acoustic cafe performance on Thursday march 5th. The crowd was decently large and they did not just come for coffee, they came to see Patritto, a backwoods girl from Hurley Wisconsin that has a passion for singing and playing the piano. Seventeen year old Patritto took an early interest in the music field, as a six year Patritto begged for piano lessons and ever since she's been playing her piano and singing. When I arrived to the performance I was not sure what to expect, all I knew about Patritto was that she was a seventeen year old singer/song writer. After hearing her first song "Regrets" I knew she was not afraid to let go of her inhibitions and just lay it all out there vocally. The blonde-haired teen took me by surprise, she’s a young girl with strong and developed vocals.
Patritto has a little bit of a Taylor Swift feel going for her, her music has a hip hop rhythm with a hint of country twang in her voice. Much like Taylor Swift Patritto writes a lot of songs about love, when asked why she stated “Well I'm in high school, so I watch all my friends relationships, and I am always getting different inspirations for songs, along with my own experiences.” Although she comes off a little Taylor Swift, Patritto’s true hero is country music star Martina McBride. She has seen McBride perform on seven different occasions and says she is “blown away by her voice.” Patritto also admires that McBride is extremely family oriented, that’s something that she as a young musician also values.
Patritto is a very confident and poised performer, when she took the stage at acoustic café it was evident she was relaxed and ready to perform. Her first couple of songs were original well-written pieces of music. She sang with a lot of passion and edge. Patritto also sang rather dramatically, she would build and build during the chorus and really draw you in, and at then end she would lighten up and slow the feel down; it was a very captivating effect. Bold is another good word that describes the young singer, she’s not afraid to sing well known songs by popular artists such as Chris Daughtry, Jewel, Martina McBride, The Dixie Chicks, Willie Nelson, and more. The fact that she has the nerve to sing their songs with confidence is very daring of her.
Patritto mainly performs in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Michigan but has also had the opportunity to perform on special occasions such as the Minnesota State Fair and in New York City at the Bitter End. On September 1, 2007 Patritto released her first CD; GRAND DREAMS. The solo debut album is country/pop with an alternative edge. It consists of 11 songs; ten original tracks and 1 cover track CRAZY by Willie Nelson.
Aside from performing Patritto spends most of her time sitting at her piano writing songs and practicing or participating in her school rock band. She also enjoys hanging out with friends. Her favorite thing about being a musician is having people enjoy listening to her music and relating to her songs. Knowing that her music touches other people makes her writing and practicing all the more worth while and very gratifying.

Bio

Lydia Patritto

18-year-old Lydia Patritto, from Hurley, WI, has taken the music world by storm with her very first release, Grand Dreams, which was released on September 1, 2007. With a country/pop alternative edge, Grand Dreams shouts originality. Independent recording company, In the Chips Production, did this multi-faceted recording during the summer of 2007.

From living room performances to the live stage at the legendary Bitter End of Greenwich Village in New York City, Lydia has always been driven by music. At the age of 6 she begged for piano lessons, which she began with Kristin Kolesar, and from then on she has just added to her repertoire. Piano/keys, which is evident on her solo debut album, is her favorite, but she also plays saxophone, accordion, and dabbles in mandolin, guitar, and most recently, the fiddle.

In the 6th grade Sandra Genisot stepped in to become her piano instructor and eventually, her voice coach. According to Lydia, Sandra has been her sounding board throughout the writing process of all of her songs.

In the spring of 2007, Lydia’s mother, Natalie, sent the very first recorded song, Heartbreaks, to Larry Oakes of the Bitter End to be submitted as an audition. She was later informed that Lydia had passed the audition phase and was invited to perform at the Singer/Songwriter Session at the Bitter End on July 15, 2007, the very same stage which has been graced by Billy Joel, Norah Jones, and hundreds of other successful musicians. Lydia performed five of her originals and was invited to return to perform again. She has performed there twice since then.

Being inspired by her Bitter End experience, Lydia returned from New York City completed writing three more songs. From there she decided it was time to record her first CD. Recording of Grand Dreams was completed on August 14, 2007, after the decision was made to add a bonus track. The cover song Crazy, written by Willie Nelson and performed by many, was recorded with the very talented Dave Morehouse on acoustic guitar and Lydia on keys/synthesizer.

Grand Dreams has such a variety of sounds, from a 50’s to the edgy “today” sound, that all music fans will be sure to find a new “favorite” song to add to their I tunes libraries. She performed one of her Grand Dream songs, “The Perfect Love Song” at the Minnesota State Fair. She won a spot in the semifinals and performed at the band shell during the fair in August of 2007.

Lydia has moved forward with her music career as she has teamed up with singer/songwriter/producer Mark Huhta of Nashville. Lydia recorded two of Huhta’s originals, “More” and “I Just Came For Coffee.” She has since been to Nashville on numerous occasions and has also begun working with singer/songwriter/producer Bob McGilpin.
She has been performing at more and more locations across the states of Wisconsin, Michigan, and Minnesota over the past year. She performed at the Wausau Festival of Arts, The Brink Lounge in Madison, The Hurley Coffee Company, Old Suffolk Alehouse in Ironwood, Michigan, Gingko Coffee House in Minneapolis, the Second St. Bistro in Ashland, Wisconsin, and The Acoustic Café in Eau Claire, Wisconsin to name a few.

She has also performed the National Anthem in many settings, most notably singing the anthem for the University of Minnesota Gophers baseball and basketball games. Outside of her normal performances, Lydia has done benefit concerts for local residents in need. In October of 2007 Lydia did a benefit concert to raise funds for a family who lost their home in a fire. In July of 2008 Lydia played a benefit for a local family with a terminally ill three year old. Both performances were well received and were very beneficial to the families.

She has been accepted to the Music School at Middle Tennessee State University and is excited to continue her music education and career there in the fall of 2009. For more information about Lydia, please feel free to check out her myspace account at www.myspace.com/lydiapatritto.
