CD Review: Chrissy Lovell's Weaker Than I Want To Be
By Chad Jones

The cover art for Chrissy Lovell's album, Weaker Than I Want To Be, is simple enough. A picture of the youthful singer, who mocks her own supposed 'weakness' by dawning a Superman tee, is nestled in a baby blue backdrop. But what's missing is a warning for those who may be faint of heart.

For first-time listeners, popping in this Texas songwriter's ten-track debut is like jump-starting your ears. Literally two seconds into the opening track, titled "Right Tonight," Ms. Lovell hurriedly and heartily belts out the lines "I get up on my knees / won't put up a fight / I'm gonna take time, gonna / I'm gonna make it right tonight."

From then onward, the tracks soften a bit, but almost always retain a powerful vocal display. And while Lovell's songs are often an appropriate mixture of acoustic, a cappella, and industrial sound, the singer relies less on her instruments and more on her vocals in the latter half of the CD. As a result, it is a more enjoyable, interesting, and realistic half.

In "Jeremy," an up-beat sound provided by electrical guitar accompanies an otherwise dismal subject matter. Singing "take me back / I want to go back / to my innocence / take me back," Lovell mourns a long-gone love.

In "I Want A Man," Lovell laments the idiocy and unoriginality of the average male by sarcastically singing, "what's your name, what's your number / same line, difference face."

And in her final track, titled "Wasting Time," the soft rhythm of an acoustic guitar skips and frills while Lovell coos and sighs her uncertainties:

"Am I wasting your time / When you hear my voice on the other side of a telephone line? / I'm a big girl -- you don't have to lie."

Lovell - described on her website as a musical style "that combines Tracy Chapman and Jennifer Knapp" - is a promising artist. By allowing herself to be so vulnerable, passionate, and personal, she succeeds in making Weaker Than I Want To Be an album of considerable strength.
