Sparrow

BandAlternativePop

"Imagine walking into a subterranean lounge where candles light your way as you descend a narrow, uneven stairwell. With each step, you become increasingly enveloped in smooth, funky sounds that are dark, sexy, and a bit ethereal."

Biography

Sultry, dancey, sexy, noir, and a little bit playful, "Sparrow is fronted by the dulcet-toned Christine de Michele." -Collected Sounds (Sept 07). "Christine Vocalist, songwriter and keyboardist wears a number of hats, and she wears them well. She does not do it alone, though, as driving drums and swirling, echoing guitars offer great counterpoints." - Performer Magazine (Dec 07)

Sparrow begin taking shape in a Boston attic during the winter of 2007. Hailing from the coast of Maine- observations of the world came easily for Sparrow vocalist-songwriter-keyboardist Christine de Michele, as did putting them to paper (her writing and visual art have both been published). It was now time to bring creativity and experimentation into the realm of music...within six months of forming their current line up, Sparrow played shows in 4 different states, received local and international press, and Christine was scouted and signed to SESAC.

Sparrow recorded debut EP "VIEW" which has been called "a sparkling collection of songs opening with a quiet, determined song that showcases de Michele’s vocal gifts." (- Anna Maria Stjarnell -CollectedSounds.com).

Currently, Sparrow is in the midst of recording their first full length album; whose songs were debuted at a wall-to-wall packed Saturday night show at Matt Murphy's last week. "Christine and her mates throw us happily into the sultry world of Sparrow with their slinky grooves and sensual, yet eerily affecting vocals (Performer Magazine)."

Members of Sparrow have shared the stage with local, national and internationally performing acts, some of which include Lotus, Managerie, The Old Silver Band, Flutter Effect, Yellowman, de Sol, Bill Belemy and Amy Bowles (Sam Kininger Band) Marrianne Solivan, Tom Arey (Akashik Record) Jermey Kizina and Pat Ormiston (Japhy Ryder), Audrey Ryan, Jenn Taranto, Emilia Dahlin, Annie Lynch and the Bee Keepers, Alex Radus, Alec Spiegelman, My Little Radio, The Motion Sick, Alina Simone, This Car Up, Gabriel Miller-Phillips and Cat Power.

Lyrics

Hungry?

Written By: Christine de Michele

Your nose is so cute I want to eat it,
but what does cute have to do
with eating?
your pink toes would be delicious
not to chew just to suck
and your ears
I would bite them six, eight
ten times.

Then she fried eggs with a black iron skillet,
circles white and yellow,
smooth yoke round pan and
with a red oven mitt
she held tightly the handle-
It's so pretty she said,
I don't want to eat it.

I look Down

Written By: Christine de Michele

Your fire eyes
burn
holes
in my throat
feels
empty
but I am
so full
with
you.

Letters

Written By: Christine de Michele

Darling pen-paled boy
I know your letters,
by the difference between
your A's and mine.

We used to carry the moon
you and I
one great big
impossability,

Now you are just a boy
over there, and I
at the end of some
postal route.

Slowdown and Tip-over

Written By: Christine de Michele

The world is like
a great big television-
sometimes it's nice
to watch...

but most times
it's full
of
Tiny Distractions
very bad
for us.

Shut it off
Shut it off!
Grab your shoes and run or
find a boat to
navigate
the ocean.

People people lost
inside their television worlds,
no purpose,
Mindless winde-up toys who
circle, slowdown and tip-over
circle, slowdown and tip-over
circle, slowdown and tip-over
circle
slow
down
and
tip-
over!

because they never dare
to make their own
entertainment
network
in their heads,

because they never dare
to make their own
entertainment
network
using their heads.

Information Age

Written By: Christine de Michele

I read a book,
and it tells me what to do,
and I don't even know how to answer
the questions that are running
through the corners of my mind-
I see them from time to time,
yet it's so different when they're new.

I'm listening to the radio
but I don't hear it at all,
trying to keep it straight up, lined up,
don't lose the middle, don't --- it up,
don't lose the end,
cause there's too much
to think about without
losing
some part of
some thing
gets misplaced and
it all gets erased.

This is what you asked for.
This is what we asked for.

Mind-Reel

Written By: Christine de Michele

Needles stem like straws
sucking for the air
from below the ocean's surface
another atmousphere.

Far above a Crane all white
walks the endless shore, pausing
just when waves crash close,
preparing for his flight.

Soon the tide comes making flood-
Needles reaching drown,
but feathers spread and mask the sky
and Crane springs from the ground.

Where are you today-
above or down below?
we're all the victim some days,
but that's your choice
you know.

Where are you today-
above or down below?
It's the mind-reel making you spin
your daily video.

Fast Forward Play Pause

Written By: Christine de Michele

Man feeds white ducks
circle round him near the train-tracks
at dusk.

Bridges, water, city, yellow paint, pavement, mirror, design.
Cubes and shades, lines and sky,
Cubes and shades, lines and sky-
Many-things-at-once.

Grass sweeps the loose clothes of
drummer-bums at the cinema wall.

Bridges, water, city, yellow paint, pavement, mirror, design.
Cubes and shades, lines and sky,
Cubes and shades, lines and sky-
Many-things-at-once.

Two rabbits
motionless staring.
I see you, I see you. Run!
secret tress to hide you rabbit,
quick feet now-
like mine-
keep moving.

What Quiet Looks Like

Written By: Christine de Michele

Awake.
after Dancer in the Dark.
Chilled,

by laden green walls
and by my feet because
my room was always cold-
always in winter.

Awake.
after Dancer in the Dark.
Chilled,

under my arms
trying to forget
enshrouding
my ears from all the noises
so loud- the noises.

Coiling my limbs
I make a jungle of myself
and try to imagine
what quiet looks like.

Coiling my limbs
I make a jungle of myself
and try to imagine
what quiet looks like.

Somebody Told Me

Written By: Christine de Michele

Every morning I wait,
while he wakes up-
to see how green his eyes are
today.

Somebody told me
to be alone,
Somebdy told me
to stay alone,
but after he wakes up
I cannot remember
anything from before.

Fable

Written By: Christine de Michele

You don't need a book
to be sure
of the the story you're telling.
What do they know,
what do they know
about your fable.

You don't need
a ruler to measure
what's true.
You don't need
a ruler to measure
what's you.

Just a couple of licorice twists
and new moon phases.
Just a couple of licorice twists
