"New Contemplations"

I just purchased "New Contemplations" by Christopher Dalbey through iTunes. What a pleasure to listen to, for both Gargamel and myself. On a simple, comparative level (that most artists hate), this album initially reminds me of Luna meets Oasis meets a slightly more real and rugged modern poet (Dalbey) with a passionate soul, haunting lyrics, and euphorically sparse & approachable chord progressions - with a subtle twist of Chris Isaak at his best ("Baja Sessions"). Fans of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah's Alec Ounsworth will appreciate Dalbey's similar emotional aesthetics without the nauseatingly whiney voice. Many of Dalbey's songs are very catchy ("Apprehensions to Be Had"). Watch out for "Alone With Everyone" to become an anthem for socially adept loners. "Bear" is triumphant and exhilarating, while "Good Is Better" is contemplative, rustically sweet, and will conjure worn memories for listeners in a refreshing way. I especially love the shameless Andreas Vollenweider-esque cavernous reverb-symphony sounds on "Exit" (even if Dalbey denies Vollenweider influence here). Pleasantly unpolished and honest, here is a great opportunity to directly support a talented, independent artist without breaking the bank, label-free (for now).
