"Sad December"

Plush and Folky
I liked this song. It featured a strong male lead vocal, nice backing vocals, not just singing harmony against the root, but adding counterpoint as well.

The lyrics are wonderful, and paint a nice visual, matching the emotion present in the lead vocal.

The acoustic guitar backing was well performed, but I felt the sound was a little bright - it sounded as if it might have been recorded direct. Not usually a good choice for acoustic guitar, as you tend to lose all that yummy bottom end richness.

The harmonies on this are really great, and fortify this enough to keep the orchestration as minimal as it is.

Personally, if I was producing this - I would insist on re-cutting the guitars to get a better sound - the performance is great, so this is not a knock on the guitarist.

Overall a great song that conveys it's mood appropriately.

""Scatter My Ashes" Track"

All Right!
Lyrics: "grass grows over a younger man's tracks" & SO many great lines here, tale about life lived, looking back & life movin on, good/bad - just goes. "called me the kid, the fights were 2nd rate" hey, really sweet tune -- deeper/darker V.N reference - nice blends vocally here "Scatter My Ashes" -- "Where The Wind Blows" both would work as title! Melody: haven't heard any songs w/exact same melody, so - original, rapid pace w/good melodic structure. Arrangement: allows vocal (up-front) & limited instruments works just right - Best wishes w/lyrical talent!

""Scatter My Ashes" Track"

Too Many Good Lines To Mention
This is a song chock full of outstanding lyrics, but the one that REALLY stands out is "The Devil's Dealing The Hand They Played". The melody is superb, evoking times long gone...perfect for the tone of the song. You could not possibly have arranged this any better, either. The guitar work is exemplary, and the storyline....damn, I wished I had written this, what can I say?

""Scatter My Ashes" CD Review"

"Chris Whitney is the type of artist you instantly believe. Soft spoken and understated until he strikes the first chord of his set, then Whitney comes alive with heartfelt, well crafted ballads that run the gammet of emotion from sweetly sentimental to Haunting. Chris gave me a CD the first time we met that keeps me company on late night drives home from Nashville. So download a track or two, better yet buy the CD or best of all check Chris out at one of his writers nights and have a drink with him after the show."
