"D-Fest 2007: Tulsa Growing Up"

By Crystal Kline
Monday, 30 July 2007

(Christy Clayton mentioned in 4th para.)

Diversafest is all about music—all music, of all stripes, sounds, genres. But Diversafest is something else—Diversafest is a sign that Tulsa is growing up. Diversafest shows that Tulsa embraces all different kinds of music and all different kinds of people. D-Fest is a statement that says to the rest of the world that Tulsa is ready to be taken seriously. “Empowering Emerging Artists” was the slogan the festival took to heart, by including a Singer/Songwriter panel, Music Clinics, including one facilitated by Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne, and an Industry Tradeshow. One of the apparent goals of this conference that grows exponentially by the year is to be a sort of SXSW, providing an opportunity for unsigned, emerging artists to show their stuff to producers and labels. The conference includes a Singer/Songwriter panel, Music Clinics and an Industry Tradeshow for $150.

But tradeshow aside, for the ordinary consumer of music, D-Fest was an awesome bang for the buck. For $20, a ticket holder could see 150 bands spread out over the Blue Dome District over a two-day period. That included shows from headliners The Flaming Lips and Leon Russell, in addition to the entertainment put on by the attendees, including some amazing costumes, and a few street artists, like the guy who played drums from a homemade set using pots, pans, and other household items for percussionary purposes.

[edit]

I wrote yesterday about my Friday night experiences. I returned on Saturday determined to see Pearls, RadioRadio, Autumn Shade and a few others. But the best laid plans of mice and men . . .

When I arrived at 8, I decided to start with Dirty’s Tavern on 2nd and Elgin where country chanteuse Christy Clayton was playing. The place already had a pretty good crowd when she began. Fans of country music have a good thing in Christy Clayton. The girl can belt it out, and with long unruly red hair, and a slender figure fashionably dressed in denim chic, she looks good doing it.

"Singer Launches Career at Odds On Recording"

Country Singer Launches Career at Odds on Recording
Friday, January 12th 2007

Country singer Christy Clayton (pictured center) spent the past few months recording her debut album, Devil’s Paradise, at Odds on Recording in Henderson, Nev. The album is slated for release from Las Vegas–based start-up label Desert Funk in the fall of 2006. In addition to using Odds on Recording’s studio, which is furnished with a SSL XL 9000 K SuperAnalogue console, Clayton will use the company’s CD replication services once recording is completed.

“Odds on Recording provides a world-class studio and high-tech quality that is also amicable with a medium-sized budget,” states Susan Larson, a Clayton spokesperson. “It delivers one-stop shopping through its CD replication services, providing a seamless process from start to finish. Christy is thrilled to be the first artist to take advantage of Odds on Recording’s turnkey service.”

“This top-of-the-line studio is the best and most advanced in the Las Vegas area,” says Greg Stricklin, producer of Devil’s Paradise and former owner of Unsigned Music Network. “By expanding its services with the new console, which integrates analog and digital technology, Odds in Recording offers artists the best of both worlds by providing recording and CD replication under one roof.”

"Duo Sees Room for Country in Las Vegas"

SOUNDING OFF: Duo sees room for country in Las Vegas
Friday, January 12th 2007

The Las Vegas skyline implies many things -- ostentation, conspicuous consumption, six-figure electric bills -- but for Christy Clayton, it's where the neon ends and the open expanse of the desert begins that holds the most promise.

"If you look at this city, like, say from a hillside, you see this little mass, and then you see all this space," the wide-eyed redhead says on a recent Wednesday. "And that just kind of reminds me of where we're at: There's all this space for so much to happen."

And that's what brought this well-traveled country singer with the dusky, fire-engine voice to town.

There's just one problem: "There's not a whole lot of homes for original country out here," Clayton says, her broad, frequent smile fading a bit. "They want you to get up there and play Garth Brooks and Reba and Shania. There's really not a lot out here."

That doesn't mean that the audience isn't here.

"If you go to some of these country bars -- the few that there are -- they're packed," Clayton says. "If you go into the smaller taverns, or you head out towards Pahrump, that's all they listen to."

And so Clayton has struck out to fill the void in Vegas country. She and guitarist/songwriter Greg Stricklin, have launched Desert Funk Records, a label aimed at providing some infrastructure to the local country scene.

Stricklin, a longtime music industry vet who used to own the band networking aid the Unsigned Music Network, originally relocated to Vegas to take a break from the record industry. Then a chance encounter led him to Clayton.

"I came here to be quiet," he says. "I met a guy drinking at the Silverton Mermaid Bar, and he was like, 'I got a singer for you.' I heard her sing, and I probably didn't sleep for three months knowing that I should produce her."

"I wanted to do a record that went back to where I came from," he continues, "which is the Texas roots scene, creating that whole sound, but doing it in a modern sort of way."

The result is Clayton's debut, "Devil's Paradise," a loose, free-wheeling collection of dusty Americana. It's a diffuse, big-sounding record that veers from limber honky-tonk to smoldering blues rock to touches of Motown soul.

It's a strong start for Desert Funk, whose homebase is Odds On Studios, a mammoth complex that houses state-of-the-art recording facilities and a full CD/DVD manufacturing plant capable of producing a million discs a month.

Clayton's debut hits shelves today, and she'll host an in-store at the Sam Goody at the Galleria at Sunset in Henderson this afternoon before her CD release party at Toby Keith's I Love This Bar & Grill at Harrah's Las Vegas on Friday.

After that, Clayton will hit the road, touring through New Mexico and Texas, where she's already impacted the airwaves, though Vegas has predictably lagged behind.

"We're hoping that we can wake up some people here and start some kind of movement," Clayton says, sitting across from a large aquarium in the Odds On conference room. "We want it to happen here. And we're going to try and make it happen."

"Clayton Hopes Her Edgy Sounds Finds Fans"

Article published Saturday, January 27, 2007

Christy Clayton had a dream as a kid living in Lambertville and Adrian.

"I wanted to grow up and sing at Cedar Point," she says with a laugh from somewhere in the desert near Las Vegas.

Clayton's not going to have much time to work on the Cedar Point thing. She's building a music career in Las Vegas.

Desert Funk Records, an independent label, released her debut album, "Devil's Paradise," earlier this month. To Clayton, the term "country" misses the mark. "Devil's Paradise" has a little Americana, a little Motown, a little blues, a little honky tonk.

"I was going for a different sound. This sound is edgy. We wanted to go for something out there, gutsy. I'd call it kind of grungy country, a rockier sound, jazzy, bluesy," she says. "What's out there in country has already been done. Who wants another girl singer singing the same old types of songs? I think if we can stick this out, we'll be rewarded."

Earlier this week she was working on a video for "See You in the Morning," a cut off her album. The plan is to take the video to appearances in Texas next month. She'll be playing at bars throughout the state and making appearances at radio stations to promote the album and to lobby for airplay.

"There are people in Texas that are starting to play it. We're really chipping away at it, getting smaller communities playing it," she says. "Things are moving for us, and we're hoping that within the next four to six months, we'll get national play. We're working the radio stations hard. I really think that will be a springboard for us."

The road is particularly tough for an indie artist, but Clayton's CD release party was more successful than even she could have hoped. It was held at Toby Keith's I Love This Bar & Grill at Harrah's in Las Vegas. The capacity is 600 people, but Clayton packed in that many and had a line of others waiting to get in. A Las Vegas country radio station held a live remote from the site, bringing her valuable publicity.

"The people I talked to were really excited to be there and to hear some of our music for the first time," she said.

Clayton and those at Desert Funk Records are using the Internet as much as possible to get her music out to the public. She has her own Web site, www.christyclayton.com and also has a page on MySpace. That page can be found by going to www.myspace.com and typing in Christy Clayton under the music category. The album can be purchased from those sites.

It turns out that a lot of people still remember her in the Toledo area, where she lived before moving after her sophomore year at Bedford High School.

"That's where a lot of my Internet sales are coming from," she says, adding that her label has been pushing hard to get her on the radio in the Toledo area.

For now, she's working on "growing my base. We're getting the album in stores in Texas, New Mexico. We don't want to put them in places that haven't been exposed to my music yet," she says. "My distributor thought we might have been a little overzealous with the first batch of CDs we ordered, but now he's asked for another batch."

Brian Dugger's column on country music appears in The Blade the last Saturday of each month.

"Voted "Best of Las Vegas" 2007"

Best Local Country Band -- Editor's Pick
March 25, 2007

CHRISTY CLAYTON
Las Vegas , NV

A poised singer with a rebel streak, Christy Clayton pushes hard against the bounds of modern country, and what results is a sound as full of wide open spaces as this dusty state. From hard-edged honky-tonk to dirt-beneath-the-fingernails rock 'n' roll, Clayton is a throwback to the days when country music was defined by an attitude as much as a sound.

"Devil's Paradise CD Review"

The no frills, raw sound of Christy Clayton's debut album, "Devil's Paradise" takes Country music into new territory. Greg Stricklin kept the production stripped down so you believe the band actually played it all in one take. It adds an energy to every single track.
If you like your Country music sweetened with LA music executive's sugar cubes or coated with New York money men's coffee-table Country choruses, you WON'T like this superb album. If you like your Country on the rebel edge, you'll love it.
And what makes everything we've said so far strange is that, if the label lifts "Drift Away" from the album and puts it out as a single, they'll probably make - at least - the top 40. The chorus hook is too damn catchy for a reviewer's health.
"One More Bottle" is a fine song if only because it demonstrates the effects drinking has on life, rather than being the typical - I drank too much redneck anthem.
Musically, Clayton's album is adventurous. Greg Stricklin wrote or co-wrote every track (Clayton co-wrote three tracks), and his willingness to turn unusual chordal corners keeps the listener on the edge of the seat.
You just never know what's coming next.
So it is that "When I'm Gone" catches the attention, and the same applies to "Long Way From Home".
Perhaps, for a red dirt style album, the most surprising thing is the prominence of acoustic guitar.
In fact, the electric guitar keeps it's head low for most tracks.
The acoustic work is superb, true rhythm guitar - you can imagine Stricklin and Clayton on stage doing "Nowhere" with no other accompaniment.
On the other hand, the rock edge of "Abused" is almost purely electric.
The other standout feature is the piano work of Joe Spraker, adding just the right edge to some tracks and just the right "tinkle" to others.
All of that said, we almost forgot to mention (sorry Christy) what a superb vocalist this girl is.
If she is persistent, she can become one of Country's long-term artists, outlasting the froth which LA and New York keep foisting us off with in the name of Country music.

Our view: Try it!!

"Devil's Paradise CD Review"

With a soulful delivery, trademark diva looks, and a voice reminiscent of Melissa Etheridge, Christy Clayton has the makes of any country superstar. Her debut album, Devil’s Paradise, is a solid attempt at catching a sound not typical in today’s country music scene.

Adding to Clayton’s vocal power, range, and sense of phrasing is Greg Stricklin’s complex instrumentation and arrangements placing Devil’s Paradise outside of country music’s generally confining box of commercially southern-fried pop.

Unlike her contemporaries’ love for slow ballads, Clayton’s inventory is stocked with upbeat, full-bodied anthems layered with harmonicas, the sax, searing electric solos, and pounded piano keys.

Clayton and Stricklin convincingly deliver a stylish combination of country, blues and rock for the overly selective music lover.

"Devil's Paradise Top 12 DIY Album!!!"

Christy Clayton
Devil's Paradise
Featured Download: "Devil's Paradise" MP3

New artist Christy Clayton combines drums and twangy guitars with piano, saxophone and strings on her country-rock debut, Devil’s Paradise.

Clayton’s got a set of powerful pipes and an envious range—think Pat Benatar if she’d grown up on a ranch with plenty of open desert to belt tunes at. The women in Clayton’s songs are just as strong. The title track tells the story of a girl barely out of high school as she meets up with a drifter who “put her on stage wearing only a broken heart.” In “Ain’t Worth What It Used to Be,” she sing about living hard with “not even a nickel in my pocket.” “One More Bottle” details a break-up that even too much alcohol couldn’t prevent while “Fly Away” finds Clayton telling a soon-to-be ex-lover “even if you clip my wings, still I will fly away.”

Tough characters, powerhouse vocals and driving beats add up to a great album that even the non-devils among us can enjoy.

Christy Clayton was voted “Favorite Female Vocalist” on NewCountryStar.com after earning 50% of an unprecedented 35,500 worldwide votes!

Devil’s Paradise, which has been categorized as everything from Alt. Country to Red Dirt to Hot AC to Blues, has received some outstanding reviews. Here are a few excerpts:
“This record is like nothing I’ve heard before - it can’t be pigeon-holed into rock, blues or country. And Christy’s voice is a talent I haven’t come across – one minute it’s soaring and soothing, and the next it hammers you down with raw emotion. The production value and musicianship are untouchable. You definitely have an instant fan in me.”
--Brad Austin, Program Director, KLUR (Wichita Falls, TX)

"Tough characters, powerhouse vocals and driving beats add up to a great album that even the non-devils among us can enjoy."
--Performing Songwriter, Nashville

“Christy Clayton has struck gold, maybe even platinum with ‘Devils Paradise!’
Refreshing vocal style, and a smile as big as Texas, makes Christy a new voice to be heard and Greg Stricklin’s excellent production and a cast of tight contributors make ‘Devil’s Paradise’ a top choice for 2007.”
--Big G, Host of Big G’s Road Show, KRVL (Kerrville, TX)

A busy fall schedule including dates in TX, OK, AR, MO, TN and OH is next up for Christy. In October, she's opening for The Wreckers in Las Vegas!
Look for her coming your way soon!
