GUITARIST CHRIS WHITE REVEALS THE SOFT SOUL OF JAZZ WITH HIDEAWAY

Jazz phenom, master of soul, R&B virtuoso – it would be an honor to be thought of as any of these, but if you can be considered for all three, you’re doing something – if not everything – just right. Swirling these genres into a soulful blend of jazz to be articulated for the first time, Chris White reveals the essence of his music not only in style, but in the passion he brings to both the stage and the studio. Hailing from Wisconsin, Chris White and his group of equally talented singers and instrumentalists clearly have a deep love and respect for music, as evidenced by the sincerity of their free-flowing rhythms and soothing melodies. Between musical formats that have been either slipping into obscurity or relegated to pumping out hit after simple hit for pop radio audiences, White brings life to a style that has lost some of its strength in recent years. His blend of sensual soul and the intellectual reaches of jazz mix to form a whole new avenue for music listeners and lovers to enjoy. Now, boosted up by a new CD, Hideaway, Chris can share his passion for music and the chords that will bring audiences back to substantial ideas and meaningful chords, buoyed on a raft of soul and musical inspiration. Featuring songs that are thoughtful and complex, Hideaway is the epitome of Chris White’s melodic message and the perfect platform for an introduction to a new concept of feeling and thinking in music.

Stringing together the perfect mix of vocal and instrumental tunes, Hideaway really gives the impression of music for musicians, and an intellectual direction that any listener can appreciate. The first lyrical song, Can’t Hide from Love, keeps itself upbeat with a snare and bass drum backbone, complimented by singer Joe Jordan’s easy-going vocals and a hypnotizing soprano sax. Though rooted in jazz, Can’t Hide from Love is reminiscent of 70’s super group Earth, Wind, and Fire’s soulful ballads. The opening instrumental track, Parade, again features a flawless alto sax, this time incorporating marimba lines and even a bagpipe undercarriage. The kind of instrumental blend throughout the album is a testament to superb writing and performance by Chris and his group. Such cool comprehensive style is difficult to find, even for experienced studio groups. That the soothing lines of each song fit so well around instrumental and vocal lines, such as the gentle rhythm of Last Time, intertwining guitar and piano with the silky voice of Janet Planet, makes Chris White’s Hideaway that much more impressive and enjoyable.

Chris White, a lifelong student of the guitar, makes his home in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, though he originally hails from Los Angeles. Having played nationally and internationally, and studying with some of the best instructors around, Chris now plays with a number of different musicians in a group he calls Playtime, recently culminating the collaborations with his friends and members in Hideaway. The album has at the same time a familiar and totally unique sound. Drawing influences from the R&B style of Stevie Wonder and the jazz approaches of artists like Earl Klugh and Ernie Watts. The result is a soulful musician’s blend that anyone could enjoy, much like a James Taylor feel or the softer side of Tower of Power. The new album possesses a smooth, fluid sound that perfectly describes and displays the talents of Chris White and Playtime.

Hideaway is a masterpiece of jazz and soul, incorporating slow and upbeat styles to take shape as a powerful blend of passionate musical appeal and the coolest of styles. The fruits of Chris White and Playtime’s work together are evident on the record, with a sound that almost lingers in the air when it flows from the speakers. Like its title track, Hideaway is a gentle thrill ride of style-meets-intellect, and makes the perfect piece to add to any musical collection.

Bio

Jazz Guitarist hailing from Los Angeles, now residing in Oshkosh Wisconsin. White's unique list of influences has given him a much sought after sound.
Strongly influenced by sax players Kirk Whalum, Ernie Watts and Mark Russo. Also guitarists Earl Klugh and Pat Metheny. And film composers Ennio Morricone and Alan Silvestri.
White not only composes jazz, but has a lengthy repetoire of original orchestral works.
Chris approaches each composition with a welcomed intensity, be it fiery outbursts on guitar synth, or the warmth of nylon string ballads.
Clearly one of Jazz' quick rising composers and performers.
White is currently touring with his 7-piece band PLAYTIME, and doing side work as well.
