American Dream

American Dream ©2009 Chuck Leger

Before the riches that success brings
Before the young ones were told
Before the arrows and slings
Before the dream was sold
My grandfather went up to Labrador
And tore down and American Base
When the hounds were let out the door
I donned the cloths the war that he wore and gave chase

I was born in America
Born one of three sons
In a city
Known around the world
For insurance and guns

The words of my father were plain
Only a few would rise to the top like cream
And the moment they were spoken I was abruptly awoken
From an American Dream
From an American Dream

I was told to stay out of trouble,
And told to come home at night
And in this world there are things that are wrong
And there are things that are right.

And it seemed like everyone worked real hard
It seemed like they were playing high stakes
We hung out in abandoned lots , between the haves and have not’s
jumping fences and caching snakes

I was born in America
Born one of three sons
In a city
Known around the world
For insurance and guns

Sodas were two for a dollar
And the rails on the tracks they gleamed
And the shirts that we wore, from the second hand store
Had not a collar and the bottle rockets screamed

Before the riches that success brings
Before the young ones were told
Before the arrows and slings
Before the dream was sold
The words of my father were plain
Only a few would rise to the top like cream
And the moment they were spoken I was abruptly awoken
From an American Dream
From an American Dream

Don't Let Me Be Your Last

Written By: Chuck Leger

The sparrows lifted
At the sound of the first blast
The air cracked and shifted
And shook the forward mast
There was a calm upon the deck
A calm that could not last
That cannon brought the coming
Of the war

If you receive this letter
You’ll know my time on earth has passed
If I.ve been your first true love
Don’t let me be your last

Tonight at watch I stand
My legs long for the oceans
My heart longs for the land
I know a gallows from the galley and the sea
I know that you are something grand
We are anchored in a sound
I am studying the sky
The Lieutenant knows not where we.re bound
Nor do I

If you receive this letter
You will know my time on earth has passed
If I.ve been your first true love
Don’t let me be your last

I have sailed from Massachusetts
To the shores of Tripoli
I have yet to see the Orient
Right now it’s you I’d rather see
And my legs they long for the ocean
My heart longs for your hand
I have seen some wondrous things,
I’ve seen that you are something grand
I have seen some wondrous things,
I’ve seen that you are something grand
