Lyrics

I Came to Hear the Music

Written By: Chuck Stone(I Came to Hear the Music)

Pretty sweet things
Perched round the table
Could see something stir
By the courtyard maples
But not really looking
Engrossed in their words
She said he was the cutest
Guy in the world
Then the wind blew the snow
Through the door as he came in
the bouncer's brow furrowed
as if to say what ya doin
and old man in rags
took his hat from his head
I came to hear the music he said
In the front corner playing
guitar and a fiddle
he looked round for a seat
wiped his beard of the spittle
as his wide eyes searched
strangers' heads turned to sneer
he walked to the bar to ask for a beer
As the fiddler played
an old song that he knew well
he smiled and watched
as the bow gently drew out
the notes so subtle that sang
in his head
you came to hear the music
they said
A sound so sweet and kind
warmed his heart
from the cold outside
he walked cross the floor
sat down by the door
and sighed
as he wiped his eye
When the band broke he watched
the snow fall from the window
dropped his hat on the floor
as he fished for a billfold
he put down three bills
on the bar and he turned
the band started up
as the feeling returned
Its been a hard winter man
not much work have I had now
I just hope for the day
when I can pay for a bed now
I'd be asleep in my car
by the cold river bed
But I came to hear the music
he said
A sound so sweet and kind
warmed his heart
from the cold outside
he walked cross the floor
sat down by the door
and sighed
as he wiped his eye
