"Dahl Art Center"

Chuck Suchy is without question one of the most professional, talented and impressive musicians I have booked for the Rapid City Arts Council concerts. I ran my own booking agency for 25 years, produced several festivals and events, and it takes A LOT to impress me. Chuck had the audience at hello, held them for 90 minutes and they left wanting more. Chuck is that rare performer that is the whole package. The guy can tell a story that flows effortlessly into the next song, and unlike most performers you can’t decide what you like most, his stories or his music. His guitar playing is strong and flawless. He also sold out the room. I had not heard Chuck before, but I will certainly book him and hear him again,, soon.

Bio

Chuck Suchy’s folk music is traditional sounding but unique. His styles can two-step or toe tap straight to the heart. Some songs are familiar sounding and some more abstract, drifting through waters that reflect fresh views on older ways of life. He blends a captivating live performance with a steady guitar and voice that find good company within intertwined stories, themes, and ideals.

For over 30 years Suchy has honed his skills on textures of Midwest American farm and folk life. He is rooted along the banks of the Missouri river near the historic Bohemian Hall just south of Mandan, ND. Although he actively farms the family homestead, he still finds time to travel and perform his songs whether it be at the Kerrville Folk Festival or sitting in on A Prairie Home Companion.

Suchy’s humble songs have built him a loyal and fun-loving audience throughout the US and into parts of Europe. What sets him apart is that he lives the songs, his hands are on the tractor steering wheel as much as they are on his guitar. These songs have graced many parts of the folk world such as: Winnipeg Folk Festival, Smithsonian Folklife Festival, Owen Sound Summerfolk, and Sioux River Folk Festival to name a few.

In 2004, Suchy released his fifth album “Evening In Paris” to rave reviews across an international spectrum of folk and acoustic music fans. This album sailed Suchy’s songs over an undulating Joe Savage pedal steel that combined artfully with producer Peter Ostroushko’s fiddle, mandolin, and wit. Acoustic Guitar Magazine proclaimed: "his mature voice hovers over the Great Plains like heat ripples above summer blacktop. This is country music with its fingers in the soil and its heart heading down the highway on an Indian motorcycle." Suchy’s achievements have also gotten the tip of the hat from the likes of: Acoustic Guitar Magazine, Folk Roots Magazine (UK), Dirty Linen Magazine, and the Boston Globe. Not to mention being tagged “one of the Great American songwriters” by Kerrville Folk Festival founder Rod Kennedy.

Despite the accolades, Suchy remains humble and difficult to categorize. He is a beacon of Midwest American farm life through his songs and stories, a diamond in the rough radiating tradition, spirit, wisdom, history, and humor, that ultimately compose; a keeper of culture.
