"Review inserts and album scores"

Chui are an up-and-coming young trio from Croatia who have developed their own rather unique take on jazz. Their potent blend of dance club rythms, jazz vocabulary, turbo-charged jazz/rock fusion and an uncompromising commitment to groove permeates their first album from start to finish and has them firmly entrenched as a mainstay on the Central European music scene. At the end of 2013 their second effort was released by Dancing Bear Records to widespread critical acclaim and even greater enthusiasm from their dedicated fanbase. Their all-star line-up brings together three of the top cats on the Croatian scene: Toni Starešinić – keyboards & electonica, Vojkan Jocić – sax & electronica , Janko Novoselić – drums.

"Chui - The Second Arrival"

Chui (Leopard language Swahili author note), Zagreb jazz duo, under the auspices label house Dancing Bear this year she released her second studio album, "The Second Arrival." Toni Starenišinić Duro Dobranić show great talent on this record, which is not a coincidence main favorite for the home album of the year. Modern jazz structure, namely a fusion of jazz, rock, ambient, funk, space sounds, spiritual music, and even drum n bass are reason enough for this project turned occasional puzzled musical head. Last year, their first album simply titled Chui picked up rave reviews and so "started" the band and gave him airtime on independent portals. Particularly accurate and picturesque been reviewed colleague terapija.net: This team has no doubt made one of the best and most original instrumental Croatian albums in the 21st century. They have built your music and your style, genre completely unloaded and completely free, leading to the slogan 'be yourself, and different It should be noted that the boys recently performed as the opening act at the closing concert cycle "ZEZ" where no problem "stole" the show the main act of the evening, Tarana Duo. After listening to "The Second Arrival", which by the way has an excellent cover with cartoon "mascot" of the band, I was quite taken aback art of pairing seemingly incompatible. "Chui's Waltz," the first track on the album is reminiscent of jazz interpret Mars Volta in his best days, you can hear the most phenomenal work on the drums that accompany metered space effects and interesting distorted guitar. High instrumental start to finish entering the sax solos, after which perfectly fits the album's first single, "Venus vs. Mars ". On this song Chui in just 3 and a half minutes manages to present the definitive sound of the album. Again a high pace, excellent vocal sample that has a sociological critique in itself, bass lines that would shame even Roy Ayers, sensual sax solos and even hip hop sctraching managed the squeeze in such a short period of time. Impressive. The album continues in a slightly more sedate pace (Hypnodrome) which is very reminiscent of the early works of God Is An Astronaut, especially the song "All Is Violent All IIS Bright" where both quite unexpectedly after starting low and dreamy work on the piano drum n bass station strip, where again, quite expectedly, drummer Duro Dobranović, did a wonderful job. The centerpiece of the album (Why Can not We Be Friends and Umfufu) has been concentrating on themselves to jazz, especially "Umfufu" in which the saxophone dominates its burst in, each time with a completely different sound, what a great way to give these dynamics somewhat longer progressive songs. "Kalelagra" dedicated Kresimir Cosic, "a man from another planet," atmospheric pays tribute to this great man of Zadar. Although credited as a song, it is actually a prelude to the last song of this phenomenal album. "Chui Is Here To Stay" perfectly rounded in his nine minutes of "entity" that band was created from this album. Association of the universe, nostalgia, sensuality and beauty that it all be rounded progressive rock "greet" us with this extraordinary musical journey. The Second Arrival is a great "melting pot" of modern jazz and progressive rock music. To say foreign counterparts, "tight delivery," the entire band through the entire compact disc, hold a high pace and not hinder the experience through all 8 lanes, one of which is my personal favorite and the single "Venus vs. Mars' best and running. The home album of the year. - www.soundguardian.com

"Review: CD Chui: CHUI (Dancing Bear, 2012) & THE SECOND ARRIVAL (Dancing Bear, 2013)"

Zagreb Jazz trio Chui who initially did keyboardist Tony Starešinić, drummer and trumpeter Duro Dobranić Andrej Jakus, eponymous debut album was released in late 2012, and the interest and praise that aroused surprised, they said, and the members. Acoustic-electronic blend of jazz, ambient, fusion, psychedelic, funky well as the wider, much of the ear primarily associated the "rock-phase" Miles Davis (end of the 60s, beginning of the 70s), and strongly present "a rock vibrations" in Chui's jazz undoubtedly has expanded its range of audiences. Just as free, unburdened and imaginative, but always purposeful utilization of the overall stylistic arsenal, regardless of his sort out. Therefore Chui attracts alternatives and in electronics and lovers club dance music and progressive fans. In addition, the relatively frequent appearances showed that it was extremely exciting, powerful concert live band which manages to achieve a lavish magic as a few people, it can be said on a global scale. A large number of those present concurred in the assessment that, as the only local representatives, Chui made a stronger impression on foreign guests in a series of concerts in autumn 2013 organized ZEZ, Institute for experimental sound, in Zagreb KSET. In any case, swept formal stars of the evening, New York Tarana Duo. Fascinating concert miracle happened, for example, in January 2014 in Zagreb Bacchus. Both of these performances were held in the "intermediate" position, with the saxophonist Vojkan Jocic who replaced Jakuša, to group then left and Dobranić, on whose site now Janko Novoselic. The second album "The Second Arrival" was released in late 2013, again accompanied by the very critics of superlatives. The official lineup at this point did Starešinić and Dobranić while Jocic played as a guest on four of the eight tracks. Personnel are in the guest release, the individual pieces complement Jakuš, trumpeter Branko Sterpin, trombone and ocean sea shells player Nenad Grahovac, and DJ Venom, developer and author of sound effects Hrvoje Niksic (an important contributor to the firstborn) and Zeljka Veverec and Matthew McGrath as actors-storytellers in words (in English), extremely funky dance joke "Venus vs. Mars" which interviewed stranger discovers that the head of the radio came to Croatia from Mars, what she's, of course, do not believe. "The Second Arrival" approximately equal to the scheme firstborn "Chui" and does not bring significant shifts, but praiseworthy elaborates, animates and branches of what is logical-intuitively expected, and it could be said that in general somewhat more aggressive and earthy than generally onostranijeg, melankoličnijeg, perhaps odvažnijeg "Chui" significantly marked "undecided" sobbing, muffled cries Jakuš trumpet. "Chui" was opened by the brilliant ten-minute miles-style jazz-heavy-psychedelic "Punch" resting on thickened bass section and decisively colored trumpet "stop-and-go-ask-is-everywhere-to" meandering, that the direction was drastically different dance club "in Memory of Drum'n'Bass, "passed in a playful bass groove (Hrvoje Kaučić) and the drum, an unusually successful connection the sound of the sixties, or hammondovskih falls for example. Jimmy Smith sound and dance floors of the 21st century (and many things in between), enriched with "Spaceship" and assorted effects - which after all, is decorated, complete offer of Chui - this occasion with discreet stranded topic Hendrix's "3d Stone from the Sun". Chui-2 "Second Arrival" re-epic, opens six and a half minute "Chui's Waltz" which is dominated by the sound of prog-heavy electric guitar (played on keyboards) and who may be associated with the best moments of Leb i Sol (as well as many other Chui's moments), that the danger of a possible breath too serious "progressive" self-importance was at once broken sting irresistible dance rhythms of the said "Venus vs. Mars". On "Chui" followed by "tired" but not anemic, "Night," a piece of quiet strength again determined tense indecision Jakuš phrasing, to make us second tour de force album, fifteen minutes "Sea Suite" heading and subheadings ("Waves / New Child / Island ") withdrew the abandonment wave and current that will take us, the beat of the human heart, with floating, meditative thought trumpets as unobtrusive, warm, friendly transcends the horizon, take on a mysterious journey above-water and underwater world that we finally got to the island paradise on where everything is created tailored stressless relaxed and modest comfort. "Chui Radio", with anchorman us support Zeljka Veverec, in English, and with the enthusiastic drum groove and gently fuzzy keyboards, back to urban civilization in which, idealized, radio program offers music finest musical criteria. And as an appropriate finale offered a quiet, swollen "Heal Me," with melodic playing electric piano and electric organ, anchored perceptive, confident and subtle Dobranić's drumming. The opening duo of establishing the diversity in "The Second Arrival" follows a tough, playful ambiance six and a half minutes danceable "Hypnodrome" then lounge Ambience "Can We Be Friends?" With Jakuš's contribution, and after again emphasized dance "Umfufu "reinforced with some human voices, the final trio of elegantly varies from meditation to action:" Bedtime Story "of night atmosphere is colored marimba or vibraphone sounds," Kalelagra "the sound of Chui seamlessly fits the song Tomislav Ivcic, escorted us to a kind of counterpart to the" Heal me, "the longest song on the album, the sound of an electric piano driven by the easy bit," Chui Is Here to Stay. "Chui is, therefore, imaginative, music devoted to jazz-rock band that seamlessly combines ambient-mood of images and feelings with irresistible dance pulse, fantastic fit in its expression cram all and all, and that in no time it seems that in there to the crowds, clutter, confusion, nor in style, nor in terms of sound. Produced by Toni Starešinić and Hrvoje Niksic (with the help of Valent Samardzij to "Chui") is a spatial, juicy, round, oval, the band seems to be both firm and soft, and despite unsparing utilization of modern electronics and appliances (computer) technology, the general impression is humane analogous. Arrangements - mostly Uddin, who is the main composer, and obviously the moving spirit of the group - that structurally, and in detail, playful and precise, witty as, but not frivolous, and among the attractive charms of the impression that a lot is not exactly in advance determined and fixed, but it was allowed to build and study (of course, on stage), which after repeated listening and results in an attractive and refreshing vibration live search songs on the spot. "Chui" and "The Second Arrival" is not only a first-rate albums today's Croatian music scene, but among the best of them as our boys and girls ever published. - mixer.hr

"An intimate, meaningful, rich, our"

A year after the critically acclaimed debut, Chui is back for a new salvo of praise, and it tried to confirm that deserves recognition not only locally, but also the global scene. The trio with their first album became the duo (Andrej Jakus participated only in "Can We Be Friends?"), Album cover even more refreshing, and the conclusion of the genre and stylistic shift from the first album, it's hard to make, because of the complexity of the music and because of its uniqueness and colorful. Main focus of the album does not have the sequence of songs is unpredictable, as "The Second Arrival" makes the album whose first hearing of a special and intimate jazz journey filled with experimental electronics, plenty of funky keyboards, occasional space effects, along with a drum 'n' bass Intersections. Study the compound is beautifully designed and comfortable, leaving pre-or nenaglašenost individual instruments and effects away from this release. Opened with industrial atmosphere, "Chui's Waltz" combines drums tossed the whole progressive keyboards and saxophone jazz-oriented, making a sturdy introduction to "The Second Arrival." Infectious, penetrating keyboards, occasional 'scratching', explosive sounds of the saxophone solos, classic funk beat and interesting dialogue provided "Venus Vs Mars", an excellent single, which in its three and a half minutes of content presents some preliminary Chui's trip. The role of keyboards on the album is a dynamic and diverse: the driver riff on "Venus Vs Mars", by giving a melancholy mood on "Can We Be Friends?" To atmospheric jazz shares in "Bedtime Story", which sets the keyboards like most prominent leading instrument. Ambient - minimalist introduction in processing Ivčić's "Kalalarga" Chui has touched new fields and opportunities for teaching songs, relying on the interpretation of several recognizable tones, giving the song more than her 'take', which shows the essence and purpose of the processing of songs. Another Chui's arrival concluded in optimistic, refreshing "Chui Is Here To Stay", nine minutes graceful and grandiose sum of interlocking repeated motifs piano, saxophone, trumpet, rounded flowing Amendments keyboards and space effects. "Chui Is Here To Stay" is not only an extraordinary individual work of art, but also the absolute highlight on the album, if I dare to point out any of his number. Chui's another musical mission is extremely intimate act, a genre of content, style, and sound-rich, and ultimately ours. Great proof that the pursuit of excellence albums no need to oversize geographic boundaries, as colleagues exhaustively detailed and assayed. - www.muzika.hr
