"SXSW Music Announces First Band Cull"

Festival, Texas, keeps rolling as only this town can. Three days removed from the rain and ruin of a two-week Austin City Limits Music Festival, South by Southwest has announced its first cull: 195 acts descending on Austin ranging from all points between here and Taiwan.
Twenty-seven locals dot the March 11-16 landscape, including Raina Rose, Penny & Sparrow, Boyfrndz, Grace London, Cinco Doce, Burgess Meredith, and OBN III’s, all of whom will make their first appearance at the music conference. They’re joined by established acts (Los Lonely Boys, Amy Cook), up-and-comers (Wild Child, East Cameron Folkcore), and a few that warrant a wealth of national attention (Shakey Graves, Ume, Whiskey Shivers).
Nationally, SXSW invites Chaos in Tejas heroes the Men, recent (Tom) Petty Fest stunner Jessica Lea Mayfield, New Orleans bounce braggart Vockah Redu, Houston rapper Killa Kyleon and country man Robert Ellis, California bluegrass trio the Devil Makes Three, and Angelo Moore & the Brand New Step, the new project from Fishbone saxophonist Angelo Moore, among others.
The most pressing reason for SXSW’s early acceptance pertains to international acts, and their need to secure flights and proper visas. Eighty-one of the first 195 announced bands will come from foreign lands – though, based on what’s happened in previous years, a few will likely back out – including the Dunwells, an English band signed to the local home of Los Lonely Boys, Playing in Traffic Records; Greenland folk-popper Nive Nielsen & the Deer Children; Burger Records’ Dutch treasure Mozes & the Firstborn; and Andrea Echeverri, the longtime singer in Colombian rock outfit Aterciopelados.

"MTV Tr3s El Headliner"

Tr3s Exclusive: Jay Moya Discusses Cinco Doce’s Unique Sound And Headliner Win

I had the pleasure of speaking to Jay Moya, from the Austin-based cumbia-style band Cinco Doce about their recent September win on Tr3s‘ El Headliner. We discussed Cinco Doce‘s unique sound and their passion for enhancing the sounds of cumbia music with other musical influences like urban R&B.

Moya admitted to being caught off guard winning El Headliner, saying,

“We were surprised. It was very pleasing, wonderful great news that we accomplished what we needed to broaden our market. We have a unique style of cumbia, being from Texas– we put so much into it, like hip hop and reggaeton. It’s got so many influences in it, not just one style.”

I asked Jay what their secret weapon was to their recent win, and he shared,

“There aren’t too many bands that sound like our style, so we were able to develop a unique product. We developed a new sound in the cumbia genre that people really liked.”

Moya also mentioned how important social media was in getting their name and music out there, as well as word of mouth. Promoting their music in all these different ways was certainly a crucial element contributing to their recent success.

Even though Cinco Doce is based out of the Austin area, they still gave the 305 mad props. Not only did Moya mention previously making music with Cinco Doce in the Miami area, appearing on Primer Impacto and Sabado Gigante, but he also hinted that one of their dream collaborations would be with Pitbull, Mr. 305 himself. So Pit, if you’re reading, how about a surprise appearance with these Austin artists if they’re in the area? That would make a crazy show.

Jay says the songs they create encompass quite an array of personal experience, from the joys of dancing cumbia to some darker songs from their earlier works. He added,

“We all kinda grew up in the same neighborhood, so we have known each other for years, so we know what we’ve been through individually, so it’s definitely a lot of life experience.”

I asked Jay what his favorite part of performing live was and he explained,

“Hearing that crowd roar gives you so much energy. It’s so amazing, we’re like ‘we’re doing it, this is exactly what the people want.’ So we keep on doing what we’re doing, and I think that’s what it is. Seeing the feedback at our shows, especially the feedback we get from the people that have never seen us before.”

Congratulations to Cinco Doce, the September winner of El Headliner on MTV Tr3s. The band will be working on their next album, Subelo, and will be making appearances across the United States. If you enjoy catchy lyrics and unique danceable beats, make sure to catch one of their unforgettable shows.
