"Five Questions With Cinzia & The Eclipse"

Montreal, QC-based four-piece dark pop/ alternative rock band, Cinzia & The Eclipse have recently released their new single, “Out of Love“. Check out the single below, and find out more about the band in our Five Questions With segment.

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

We’re Cinzia & The Eclipse, a dark pop, alternative rock band from Montréal. We let our influences run wild through us when we write blending our love for gritty rock ‘n roll with a little modern twist to it!

We have Cinzia on lead vocals, guitar, Massimo on drums, Chase on lead guitar and Gina on Bass.

Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.

Massimo: When writing we tend to walk the line of our own experiences through love and heartache. It usually begins with a simple soft melody or a thought out idea that is brought to rehearsal where we sometimes let the lyrical content lead. Then there are times where it is a concrete idea of how a certain songs’ sound and force should be and with this, it’s with each of our uniquely diverse musical backgrounds that we come together and bring the song to where it needs to be and how it’s heard in our heads.

Cinzia: We all bring a really special element to the songs so the writing style really wouldn’t be the same without everyone’s involvement in growing the arrangements form where they began to where they finish

Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?

Cinzia: We’re playing an Album launch on December 29th, at Casa Del Popolo and have a few acoustic shows coming up – We invite people to come on over to our Instagram page for more details on those!

Chase: Explosive energy intertwined with intimate emotional moments!

If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?

Chase: Out of Love, as it shows our polished influences with some grit and edginess, with a consistent pop sensibility throughout!

Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?

Cinzia: The Damn Truth 110% – Lee-la Baum’s roaring vocals hit me every time, Cleopatrick and heaps of The Beaches.

Massimo: Classics, of course, being Joni Mitchell to Neil Young to the Hip — but some wonderful local musicians have been blowing my mind recently like Matty Parker, Thanya Iyer, Jealous Painter, Kennedy and Hyre

Gina: Sky Wallace, iskwe and eric’s trip forever

Chase: Billy Raffoul and The Damn Truth - Canadian beats

"Interview: Cinzia & The Eclipse"

Cinzia & The Eclipse has just released their debut single "Out of Love." With effortless and charismatic vocals, the track tackles the realization of a dying relationship and the emotions that come along with that recognition. A great pop rock debut, the track is both empowering and provoking. Listen here and check out our interview with Cinzia below!

1) Hey Cinzia & The Eclipse! Thanks for interviewing with Indie Witches. How did the band come to be?

We came together super organically and I don't think any of us would have it any other way. We're very much about going with the flow of things so having our music come together naturally was a big part of who we are as a band.I had taking an indefinite break from my own music and decided to focus on others by promoting shows, booking concerts, PR related tasks and basically working any administrative behind the scenes role in music.
Looking back now, I can clearly see that I put my own music aside due to self-confidence issues that lead to body issues, low self-esteem and left me with no reason to believe in myself as a musician. I decided to face those issues head on which lead to lots of self-reflection, re-evaluating who I am, who I want to be and what I want my life to be. I had started playing some acoustic shows after that point where Chase, our guitarist was in the crowd. We had met a few years back and he just happened to have nothing planned that night and came to the show. After that night, we were hanging out and he began to play one of my favourite James Bay songs on guitar. we decided to do a quick cover that literally took about 10 minutes and posted it on Facebook. "If you Ever Wanna Be in Love" was the cover song that really made it clear that we had something that just clicked with each other musically and with that. I asked him to start a band with me :)

A lot of people don't know this, but this is SUPER ironic because two years before this happened Chase had asked if I wanted to join his band which I responded no to saying I wasn't a singer and was too busy! Massimo, our drummer is really musically talented and just reflects raw emotion when he plays/writes. He was really interested in joining the project since day one! We were still acoustic at the time and Massimo was the perfect rhythmic fit we were wanting in a drummer. A few months later our bassist Gina moved to Montreal and her and I got a long straight away on the first day we met! I mentioned the band, we talked about music and the next thing we knew she was jelled to us already banging out some bassy grooves!

2) Could you briefly describe your music-making process?

When it comes to making music, it usually starts with a melody or certain lyrics that kind of just manifests itself in my mind. It's kind of like a passing thought that needs to be recorded as soon as possible. Whether that writing it down or using a phone to record it. it's an idea that comes through whatever has made an impression on me though the day, week or time. I used to hate being so impressionable as a person because I would adapt ot whatever people wanted by now, it's kind of my little gem that I used when writing. to evoke an emotion that can resonate between many people is a something I'm truly grateful for! Once I've starting jogging with an idea and send it over to the band we just RUN WITH IT! Every one is so creative and passionate that the song really starts to write itself! Chase will start writing a guitar riff to the melody. Once the Skeleton is built we’ll start working together to really build the muscle and meat to the whole song and really give it some depth! I know a lot of musicians write the melody and then add the lyrics but I’m a writer before I’m a musician so our lyrics hold a lot of weight. Because of that a lot of the instruments are made to build and compliment the emotional impact of the lyrics.

3) If you could have dinner with any influential woman (living or dead) who would it be and why?

I would love to sit down with Janis Joplin. I know I know, it sounds so cliché but this is the first woman I ever saw as a young girl growing up just rock her heart out. I remember hearing her voice for the first time at a really young age and just really connecting with her and her messages. She was so raw and unapologetic. The fact that she had this raspy grit in her voice is what really resonated with me considering that my voice has always sounded like I have a permanent cough haha. It was the first time someone actually made me feel comfortable with my speaking and singing voice and i was SUPER self-conscious about it then. Aside from that, there's also all her passion that I've learnt about over the years, her struggle with substance abuse, as an artist, as a female in a dominated male genre (let's face it, music in general is VERY male dominated) I just truly feel like there'll be no smoke screens or bullsh*t if I were to have a dinner with her. I feel like it'd be very real.

4) Favorite book you’ve ever read?

The Dinner by Herman Koch. He has a really dry, dark yet witty humour that always gets me giggling to myself

5) What is your favorite part of being a musician?

Live shows, I LOVE vibing with a whole crowd and playing live sets.

6) Who are you currently listening to?

LOADS of Freya Ridings and Mahalia

7) Favorite venue you’ve ever played?

La Vitrola in Montreal.

8) Any upcoming shows? Where is the best place for fans to follow you?

We have a show coming up in December 29th in Montreal where we'll be playing Chase's other band "Smoke Rings Album Launch. The best place would be instagram at cinzia_theclipse, on Facebook at @cinziaandtheeclipse and Spotify of course ;)

9) Any parting thoughts? Open platform!

This was super fun! I loved the chance you've given to reflect on our roots as a band and personally myself as a musician. It's extremely important to us (the whole band) to really put an impact on women working in music whether ti be as a musician, producer, publicist, journalist, etc etc. So when I read about our friend Hanorah on Indie Witches I got SUPER excited to find a blog shining a light on female artists! I'm so glad that we're able to empower women this way! Rock on! - Indie Witches

Bio

After coming together a little under a year ago, Cinzia & The Eclipse have already begun to leave a strong imprint on the Toronto and Montreal live music scene with their blend of rock n'roll grit in today's pop world. Compared to talents like Florence & The Machine, they've made a splash in Montreal landing Cinzia an invitation to perform at Toronto's Honey Jam Canada festival where Coalition Music selected her as the recipient of Canada's Music Incubator Program 2019.

Years of closeted songwriting and working behind the scenes of music industry for others has given Cinzia the ability to master a lovely combination between lyrics and melody that pulls the listener in creating an experience unlike any other. Terry McBride (Nettwerk Music Group) has also described their sound as having an emotional impact and being intrigued by the vocal bits.

They've released their Debut single "Out of Love" this October on digital platforms and have also had the single featured on multiple blogs such as Canadian Beats, Indie Witches and more. With a music video release on the way next month they prepare the world for their EP release in 2019.

Ready to raise hairs through the airwaves with captivating lyrics and catchy melodies, Cinzia & The Eclipse will make you want to cling to that kleenex box and ice cream and then set fire to your past whilst strolling into a “new you” lifestyle!
