"The Freedom Sessions"

Review for The Freedom Sessions at Canes Bar and Grill in San Diego:
"Let me first point out that all 4 bands were better than average, however, the first band to play, was, as it turned out the best of the night in my opinion. I have seen countless bands over the years, most are average but every now and then one comes along that makes you sit up and pay attention. Circa Now had a presence that is rare, the bass player Scotty immediately made me think of Jack Black in Tenacious D.

The set was pretty much flawless, with great chemistry. Sometimes a three piece can be more cohesive than a four or five piece. But it was how they ended the session that really drew my attention. Josh the guitarist/vocalist started playing a riff that I know too well, the opening riff from "Paint it black" but what followed was the most creative interpretation of "Paint it black" that I have ever heard. The perfect end to the set. Which brings me to another point. Josh came up to me much later in the evening to give me a copy of the CD, he was extremely courteous and polite, a fact that didn't get overlooked. "Kiss" and the title track "100 watts" are 2 stand out tracks on their CD. This is a band that is going to go way further."

Bio

CIRCANOW, formed in 2005, delivers a hot, sweaty night of rock ‘n’ roll like few others on the scene today. With their vintage overdriven tone, circaNow drives the "blues back into the garage" by producing a sound unlike any other band. The band consists of Josh Pann (vocals, guitar, songwriter), Scotty Stover (bass, vocals) and Juston Botello (drums). As noted by Steve West, a longtime 91X DJ, “I have seen countless bands over the years, most are average, but every now and then, one comes along that makes you sit up and pay attention. circaNow has a presence that is rare”.

On Tuesday, August 26th, circaNow released their much anticipated debut album entitled “100 Watts”. Recently nominated for the 2008 San Diego Music Awards “Best Rock Album”, circaNow possesses a sound that has been described as relevant to the current times, yet influenced by classic rock from decades past. Also recent winners of Ideas to Medias’ Freedom Sessions, the band is proving themselves to be ones to watch in the San Diego music scene. The band's previous venues include: Viper Room, Casbah, Ken Club, Brick by Brick, Canes, Zombie Lounge, Radio Room, Beauty Bar, Tower Bar, and the Stage Saloon. Members of the band were recently interviewed on 91X’s radio show Loudspeaker, and by Tim Pyles on The Local 94.9FM, both on Sunday nights.
