"wool gathering album review"

The opening song on City Coin Laundry’s album, “Wool Gathering” starts with chimes and a deep bass with a slow rhythmic beat; enter piano to compliment the strings that creep in underneath and you have a tasty layered track - that’s just the first 2 minutes. Half way through, the vocals start, only for a brief chorus and reprise. The five minute and two second track doesn’t seem long enough; perhaps, an extended version may be in the works?

Track two, “The Night I Lost Control”, has a completely different flavour, a Nick Drake influence mixed with a splash of Damien Rice and a tad of Elliot Smith.

“Thoughts of dust”, is the definitely the toe tapper, deep bass, quip lyrics, “If you think the end is coming, look at around the faces at the rest of us, to my disgust.” and drips of piano. The song is somewhat reminiscent of Modest Mouse’s “Tiny Cities Made of Ashes”.
City Coin Laundry is comprised of two members: Will Cowan and Marco Longo. The pair has been playing together since 2003, having met while studying music in University. Cowan; the main composer handles bass, vocals, and keys while Longo delivers precise percussion.

Each song on Wool Gathering deserves a few good listens; this album should be on your play list on heavy rotation.

City coin laundry
There was a "sign" that stood above an old shop that seemed to make sense to me one night when I was filled with all sorts of stimulants in the drab town of Peterborough. I threw myself from a cab and looked up at the words, "city coin laundry". This sad and dirty old Laundromat that I had used for years during school had only really interested me that night. I had been looking for a band name for a while and tried everything to come up with it (hence the stimulants!). So, I stared at the words and tried to soak it all into my world as it was for the time being. For some reason, it just stared to make sense to me. Soon enough I ended up at my apartment writing the name down everywhere. This exercise ended with me waking up to every possible font and colour imaginable performed on many surfaces within my living quarters. It took a while to really enjoy the name and feel confident about it in comparison to the music. Really, it didn't matter if the music sounded like the name or vice versa. Some people even asked if it was some sort of comment on the world or something! I made some bullshit remark once about it being a metaphor or oxymoron that implied the financial state of our government in comparison to laundry and the city state. In the end, it was just a sign that made sense one night when I wanted it to.
I guess if I had to name a few influences they would be the Verve, Elliott Smith, Wilco and Damien Rice to name a few. Some of these sounds and compositions are fluent throughout my work, while some were merely my inspiration for writing anything at all. You could say that Wool Gathering is a bold marriage of electronic orchestration, and acoustic authenticity. I suppose, in general, City Coin Laundry has always taken the basis of grass root song writing and applied it towards a modern sounds cape. Although Wool Gathering is a solo recording, City Coin Laundry has always consisted of two permanent members; Marco Longo and myself have been playing together since 2003. We met while studying music at University; he is one of the most amazing drummers I have ever played with. His sense of timing, rhythm, and composition always brings something special to our songs. Personally, I have been playing music for 16 years, on top of being the primary song writer, guitar player, and lead vocalist; I have also spent the last 3 years perfecting my recording skills, (Wool Gathering is a home recorded project and mastered by Peter Letros of Sony and Wreckhouse) Marco and I have many different influences but we both remain confident and passionate towards maintaining our sound and staying true to our vision.
